Virgin TV Anywhere

I'v only just realised that the Virgin TV app looks to be fully working over 4G. This app allows Virgin TV customers to view live TV on a mobile device through the app. When I first used this app you had to be on your home WiFi network to watch live streams. I had only ever used the app to watch some TV from my iPad when not in the living room, or to set a recording when not at home. Now I discover it is allowing me to stream when not at home over 4G. Hurray - over 80 channels in my pocket!

I had been considering ditching my Virgin TV subscription in favour of free sat, but now I see great possibilities for TV on the road. Now I need to consider getting a Chromecast or something of that nature. Although I would prefer to load the app up on some Android compatible stick so as not to tie the phone up when casting to the TV.

Anyone else using Virgin TV Anywhere?

We are with virgin. Tv, internet and mobile. The virgin app is very handy.
Also it allows you to access another virgin media customers wifi through your own account.
An example would be the Galway docklands. Using our a/c we could access virgin media broadband.
However there is a catch.
Virgin media app will not allow casting through a chromecast. We don't have a smart tv so I can't answer that one.

Are you running the latest version? I did cast it to my Android TV (Chromecast built in) today, pointless I know but just to test. It would be heart breaking if it doesn't cast to an actual Chromecast.

Streaming video (HD) takes about 2gb per hour, what's your monthly allowance.
My monthly allowance is 10gb which means my full monthly allowance can be used up in 5 hours o.O .

My allowance is about 10GB. It might be time to shop around.

Try again. Why not download movies or series at home and watch anytime then. We bring the sky box with us and that allows us watch everything just like at home

I don't think I can download at home through the mobile app. I would have to bring the Horizon box with me which I wouldn't bother with. I usually try to have some movies on a memory stick which will play on the camper TV. That and Saorview is usually all I need. But now that I know the Virgin app allows me to stream over 4G, I think that could be very useful.

Tbh. I’m not familiar with your system. But if it’s anything like sky or eir it should work perfectly fine with a dish on your camper. In Ireland, Britain, and Northern France. We never had a problem
In hindsight if this is edited I will understand why. But why !!

Household supply of virgin media is by cable, not satellite dish.
No point in bring tv box with you.

Chromecasting from app to tv is not working again. I think there might be a bug in the app that was letting me cast to my TV the other day. It worked on most channels the other day. Now it only works on Virgin’s own channels. Having it restricted like this is not conducive to a proper travel companion. Why should my Virgin TV subscription not be portable for life on the road? My phone subscription is. My Netflix is. My Spotify is. Why not my TV subscription?

Sad face!

We've used Sky Go in the past and it worked well. If you have a Sky account, you can watch your favourite tv shows wherever you have decent internet (Not sure about on the continent).

I changed over to 3 broadband at home lastyear. Their 4G router gave us X3 better download speeds than the local line-of-sight provider in our area, Ripplecom. It was the "All you can eat" data plan that they were promoting at the time. Our plan is for €30 a month with a "fair usage" cap of 750GB per month. My kids can get through that much data effortlessly!! The 3 Broadband router has a 12v input, so I guess it could be used in the motorhome...

This was over the xmas since we tried the virgin app to cast onto the tv.
Firstly the chrome cast would only lock onto the wifi signal not the phone signal. Probably need to change settings on the phone .
Secondly, we found that it was only programs which are available on tv players, that could be casted. No casting for live sport or films.

Just make sure that it's 12V DC input.

Back to virgin tv app.
I went messing last night and tried chrome casting from the phone to a tv.
No joy, won't work.
Virgin only allow you to use their system to cast," horizon gateway".
Also this system is limited to using their wifi signal.

In short I don't think that any of the virgin stuff will work for campervan/motorhome.

Yes I’ve come to the same conclusion Malcom. My reckoning is that if multichannel TV subscriptions like Virgin came about the same time as Netflix, Spotify, iTunes and all the other streaming services, we’d be able to cast to any screen. But instead they have the legacy mindset of cable/ satellite providers. By letting us cast to any screen, they would be sacrificing their multi room subscriptions.

Sure, you can have your Virgin TV anywhere. Just don’t watch it on a big screen.
