Freeview TV problem at home

This does not refer to my Motorhome, but my house TV.

I've had Sky in two rooms which didn't have an Ariel connected.
Bedroom had a HD freeview large Ariel in the roofspace which received about 50 channels.

I dumped Sky and have disconnected the bedroom tv and tried to use the existing Sky cables to route the Ariel to the other two TVs. I cut off the satellite plugs and added co-axel plugs and connected both to TVs. Ariel wasn't moved.

First scan and no signal at all. Second scan and I am picking up only 4 channels, all RTE.

Ariel hasn't been moved and is close to and direct sight to Carnmoney transmitter. So it's in County Antrim and shouldn't be able to pick up border signals.

Where have my freeview channels gone? Both TVs are set to UK in their settings. I like having RTE but would love to have the other 50 as well. TVs are Panasonic and LG if that matters.

Are the Sky cables not different from co axel. You could try a small table top aerial, which would tell you if the right cable is being used. Where does the Sky cable go to in the roof?

Google tells me that satellite cable is suitable for for use with an Ariel.

I don't have an indoor Ariel and am reluctant to buy one as it will only pick up minimal channels according to reviews.

The roofspace cables were fitted by me a few years ago to the kids room, so I'm sure it's the correct cable.

You probably need to run the aerial to a booster and feed the tv’s from the booster. Only getting 50 channels on freeview seems a bit light, it should be closer to 100

Did you try and move the aerial and then rescan for new channels?

Mark its original position so that you can return it to that position if needed,

Just my 2 pence worth

The cable for sat and terrestrial is the same, I have a roll which I got from a sat guy which I use for both.
You say you cut off the F Type sat connectors and replaced them with Coax plugs, are the plugs fitted correctly, in particular, are you sure there isn't a stray strand from the outer sheathing touching the inner core, that would kill any signal.

The outputs from a sat/freeview box are analogue to facilitate the use of non-digital tv's, are your tv's digital ready.
It's interesting that you say your tv's only show Saorview and not Freeview, there are many Freeview tv's which are not equipped to process the Saorview signal, which is a more advanced system, but it shouldn't be the other way round as Saorview tv's are backwards compatible.

Although I changed from Sky a few years back I still have the sat dish and cables. I simply connected them directly to the tv and get 200+ Freesat channels.

im starting to doubt my 15 year old son's ability to listen.

He's the one who went into the roofspace and traced two separate cables. I put a coax plug on each and tried them. One gave nothing, the other gave RTE. I had a look today and think he may have missed the correct cable alltogether.... send in the 12 year old daughter when she's home from school....
to be continued

JMAC, that's interesting and wish I'd thought of that. One of the TVs has a satellite input like yours. But too late. Plugs are cut

I think that homebase stock the F type sat plugs for crimping on along with the crimping tool.

Saw them in screwfix which is near to me.

I was only with Sky for 18 months and had a new Sky Q dish. From what I have just researched, the LNB would need to be swapped over to get it to work with Freesat.

Apparently Sky Q used a different bandwidth or something. So it's back to trying to get the Freeview working.

I remember 5 years ago I was able to fit in the roof space.....

Problem solved. And confession time.

Firstly, the kids were no use sorting the wires out. I ended up crawling around to find what went where.

Correct wire established. But still didn't get any signal other than RTE. So I took a closer look.

I've fitted plugs to brown co-axel cable many times. I'm familiar with keeping the outside mesh wire away from the core.
But confession time now, the white satellite cables have a silver foil coating on the exterior of the middle plastic core protector. I tried picking this foil back but it is bonded onto the plastic inner and refused to budge.

It is obviously conducting with the mesh wire, so I used a sharp knife to scrape a fine layer of it and plastic off, leaving it white, like the inside of brown co-ax cable. First scan of the TV and I immediately received 39 freeview channels. That's with the Ariel indoors and running three TVs.

I'm more than happy with this. But RTE doesn't mind a bit of of silver foil it seems.

Thanks so much for all the advice, but it was down to operator error. 👀
