Very lucky to get out of France last weekend with the yellow vest protests anyone planning on coming south over the next week plan very carefully. We were stopped by a fairly violent crowd between Toulouse and Andorra and to take some pretty dodgy roads to get over the border.

Back in 1986 the French farmers were protesting, very vociferously, about imports of UK lamb.
On a mid-July night at about 1.00 am, as we approached Calais on the single carriageway N road (the motorway ended down around Saint-Oner at that time) what was suspected to be one of the protesters threw a rock at my windscreen from an oncoming car. Other vehicles travelling in the direction of Calais also suffered the same fate.
At the time I was driving a Humber Sceptre and having one of the older toughened windscreens the rock came crashing through and hit me on the forehead.
The result, one permanently damaged eye plus smashed nose, cheeks and forehead. I put the survival of my wife and three children down to my driving skills honed by many years of rallying. It's an interesting experience bringing a vehicle to a stop in a single carriageway road from about 50mph by the seat of your pants while blind.

Since that time I've travelled France and other European countries extensively, not prepared to be put off by the actions of a couple of crazies who were probably tanked up in the local vino. Because other vehicles targeted were from the UK I suspect they were using those with beam benders as part of the selection process.

It was scary, started the day in good humour but it took us 7 hours to go about 100 miles. By the time of 4 pm we were blocked near Foix and the crowd were getting very drunk. One guy tried to get into the van and others started rocking us, The cops looked on and did nothing. As I say just be very careful if coming through France while these protests are happening because the longer they go on the more militant they will get,

We should be more like the French, we need to protest more.

But, I hate seeing history destroyed.

I thought this was going to be a thread about what you must bring to France if driving. Yellow vests, warning triangle, headlamp deflectors etc. 😬

Has anyone been held up lately with these Yellow Jackets while in France. We are heading to Meribel next Saturday, driving Sunday from Cherbourg, skirting South of Paris then on towards Lyon. We will probably be using motorways most of the way

We will be near Bordeaux later today Tommy, from talking to people the only area affected presently seems to be Paris, but I’ll report back here on the way up..... although our route is somewhat more westerly than yours.

Thanks JJF. I have been caught up in protests in France over the years. Normally we just sit them out but don’t want them to interfere with our skiing

But they may try turning it yellow!

And everyone knows you shouldn't eat the yellow snow.

Well, we’re just north of Bordeaux tonight, on a French Passion site, a vineyard...... CamperContact # 63213.
Nothing at all on way up, no sign of the yellow vests at all.....beautiful drive from Pamplona up in bright sunshine.

Hopefully we will be avoiding Paris by turning off about Versailles. The time the farmers were striking they were stopping on the motorway. We stopped and got into the atmosphere, hamburger stands and all.
