Not sure Malcolm, but quite a few big rigs there pulling trailers too. It’s a massive site with 24hr security on site and the Police monitor and enforce the 48hr rule quite strictly which is good.

Crickey, don't you loose track of time when relaxation sets in!
Weather here has been great and our routine has been quite simple of waking up, realising there's no rush to be up, having a shower and leisurely breakfast and whatever happens from there is the norm for the rest of the day which usually is sitting out in the sun, reading and eating !
We pulled out early on the 26 Nov and tripped up the coast a bit to another aire on the coast called Campello Beach, Campercontact #29986, while it's a good aire with a good layout it is sort of wrecked by longterm stayers who really take over the site and make short term stopovers like ourselves not so welcome and leave any empty spaces in the shade and on the smaller pitches. This practice while common on big campsites isn't really in the ethos of an aire and hence one night did us, a pity really as its a nice area.

We had made a booking for the Christmas period in our old haunt in Benidorm .... on the Camping Raco campsite from 2nd December, any later arrival than this would leave us without a guaranteed pitch for the holidays when family arrive for Christmas.
So once again a northernly run up the coast to a private aire at a restaurant south of Benodorm called Restaurant OVNI, campercontact #29582. Isn't it funny how first impressions of a place can be so wrong. Doesn't look like much from the roadside, quite run down in fact, couple of men drinking at the bar......This is a 'working mans' bar/cafe, with a little private aire, not so level but levellers sorted that, has room for about 10 vans.... Spotless toilets and shower, water fill, grey water and cassette emptying, EHU if you need it, free WiFi......... So we decided this will be OK for a night, well it turned out to be 4 nights !..... and can you argue at €7 per night or a fiver if you visit the bar ! The elderly German owner is a real gentleman and we really got on well with him. The food in the restaurant is really good and we ended up eating there 3 of the 4 nights ! So, a total of €20 for our stay !..... unfortunately this is going to be his last year here as he is retiring and putting the place up for sale (hmmmm, first MHC overseas aire) .... the land beside him has already been sold for many millions for tourism development.

So Our last little jaunt up the n232 via Finestrat turn off and the high rise skyline becomes visible and about 20 minutes later we were on the road down to Camping Raco. Got in, had a look at the pitches available and were pleasantly surprised to meet people we became friendly with last year. The protocol here is to take the best pitch close to where you want to be, set up on the pitch, get in the know and when a better pitch becomes available you can get on it...... and so that was the case, we got on a smallish shady pitch but a guy going back to the UK 2 pitches down was vacating Wednesday and we got his pitch.
So, we're set up here beyond Christmas and have our Daughter and Son coming out for Christmas and friends coming out in January and another buddy and his wife told me today they were coming out too in January...... Should be fun !
Lovely here now, weather is excellent and today we went with a group (10 of us) up to Albir and walked up through the national park on a very scenic route up to the lighthouse. Awesome views. We all had a lovely meal in a small Spanish restaurant afterwards which was lovely too..... This group walk most weeks to different venues so we will partake in another few I'm sure.

Our Dogs are doing good, our oldest Jack Russell isn't fit for the long walks anymore but she enjoys a 2 or 3 KM walk each day yet and is in good health, the youngest Jack Russell is still as daft as a mop and could walk back to Donegal if asked !
So, all is good.... I'll try and do a bit more regular updates if I can......
So if anyone is in this neck of the woods then call in and say hello, were on pitch 131 on Camping Raco, (beside the pool) that's about 1 km past the Benidorm palace travelling towards Albir.

you are becoming a bit of a local now Senor Jon, at least if you need any bits, you got the Chinese D.I.Y across the road. You are spot on, ref the full timers, they put up fences ,plant shrubs, park cars and mobility scooters all on the site lines creating their own little Alcatraz. It destroys the old camper friendship.

Eating, walking and Christmas !

 ·
Posted: 17.12.2018  ·  #45
Well, all settled in and sorted for the Christmas period. Weather is lovely, in the 20’s most days and we’ve only had a couple of days rain in total. It becomes chilly when the sun goes down and heating required on a low setting in the evenings and overnight, so our gas use goes up a bit but not bad at all. We’ve got a Spanish gas bottle at local flea market (discussed on another thread) which we can exchange on site and leaves obtaining gas an easy task.... but not so bad at all as the sun is up early in the morning and temps rise quickly.

Raco campsite is filling up and we’ve been told it will be full by Saturday with people arriving for Christmas and the new year. Our family fly out on Saturday and Sunday to join us. Not cooking this year <yippee> as we’ve booked our Christmas dinners at a local venue as many of our site neighbors have done, so we’re looking forward to that. There is lots of restaurants offering Christmas dinner at different budgets to suit everyone.
Spain doesn’t do Christmas like back home, children do not get their Christmas gifts until the 6th January (Kings day) or as we call it in Ireland “old Christmas” and there is no mad sense of over indulgence or mad commercialism like home, we find that a refreshing change and a much more relaxed way to spend time with family. The Spanish make Christmas more about family rather than going crazy shopping. The old town is lovely for Christmas, although shops all open they aren’t much more busy than normal, the difference being that there is a lot of people mulling around but they visit restaurants and eat out a bit more around this time of year.
On the subject of eating (I know, must be a stone heavier but for the extra walking)..... Beni must have the most varied eateries there is, from really cheap Chinese buffet jobs to expensive top end establishments. Local Chinese do a 3 course meal..starter, main, desert and half bottle wine each for €5.25 each and we tried it, absolutely fine.
There is a group on Camping Raco that eat out once a week and we’ve been on one of the outings, local restaurant in Albir called Sapporo, see HERE, Asian place that does all the fare including Sushi and a wok cooking experience, this place is always busy and all you can eat (80 dishes to choose from) and all you can drink, yes... just keep ordering food and drink as long as you want and at €13 per head it’s superb value. 12 of us visited last Tuesday night.
This Thursday sees us visiting ‘Tapas Alley’, an area in old town dedicated to the tapas Spanish food, looking forward to it. Video below.

With all this bloody eating we’re out for a few KM’s walk most days and we’ve taken the walk up to the Cross over looking Benidorm. It’s not a difficult walk but a tight pull uphill on the way up and the views are fantastic across the 2 beaches. Link HERE
So, that’s us all about set up for our Christmas and new year celebrations and looking forward to spending time with our daughter and Son and remembering the folk we’ve lost on our journey this year, reinforcing our views that we need to make the most of our time.
On that note I wish each and every one of you a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous 2019 and health to enjoy both. Hopefully I’ll post another update before the end of 2018.

Dinners, no sugar, presents and a few Christmas craicers !

 ·

Been an eventful old week. Weather been lovely as per part of the course and things ticking along as it should and things take a change !
As you've read on our previous exploits you will know we travel with 2 Jack Russels, one getting on a bit at 13 1/2 and a younger one that's mad ! ... and you'll also know that we walk a good bit most days and the older dog hasn't been fit for it for a while now, in hindsight actually quite a few months. She has got a bit "stupid" been panting if she walked a 100 metres and sleep pattern has changed, waking up and restless, panicky and we've noticed she has began drinking ... drinking a lot of water. From past experiences we knew that can be a sign of being diabetic, so we didn't loose time in taking her to the vet on Thursday which is literally beside the site here. The vet took the mandatory blood sample for tests and sent it off to the laboratory. So jump forward to Saturday and tests back and indeed she has type 1 diabetic and an extremely high liver count. Prescribed tablets for the liver condition that the vet told us that it should bring the condition under control and the diabetics must be controlled by an insulin injection every 12 hours and a strict diet...... she's a little begger and always looking for snacks and tit bits from the table.
We had to order the insulin and it arrived on Saturday evening and we travelled up to a big veterinary practice in Alfaz that sold the necessary diabetic food we needed.

We were warned than when we administered the insulin that we must monitor her for a few hours afterwards because the blood sugars may hit a low and result in a diabetic coma, if we saw her getting faint we were instructed to coat her mouth with honey to counteract the effects.... so now a small pot of honey is at hand when we take her out. We injected her at 9pm, easy procedure to do and being raised on a farm it's something I had done before. We monitored her closely, no side effects at all and I actually never slept at all on Saturday night as I checked her hourly and she had the best nights sleep she has had for a long time.
Another insulin jab at 9am after she'd eaten and a short walk ensued, we even saw a change at that stage.... brighter, not drinking excessively, walking sharper......
Roll forward 2 days..... She's a different dog, sleeps all night normally, appetite back to normal and looking to walk eagerly again and eyes brighter and her old self again, amazing really and the best Christmas present ever. All our neighbours are over asking about her, seeing she's OK and being concerned, she's even been brought Christmas gifts !

The old town in Benidorm is lovely at Christmas and we went to the carol service in the old church up in the middle between Lavente and Poeinte promenades, a very different experience than the traditional scene we see back home, but very nice nonetheless

So, now it's Christmas Eve, today all the staff members on the site dress up, come around every pitch and give each a Christmas gift, it's lovely and there's a great feeling of comradely with everyone.

So, Christmas Day tomorrow and we're off with 12 others from the site for Christmas dinner and back to site in the afternoon for a bit of a get together.
We've another Craicer couple on the site with us, we have another Craicer on the way and yet another couple arriving in the middle of January...... so folks we await the first ever Spanish Craic meet, pictures & names to follow !
Have a great Christmas everyone and safe travels if your on the road.

Well.......
Happy new year everyone ! Time flys by when you’ve nothing to do... 8-)
Christmas Day came and went and we enjoyed our Christmas dinner in the “Corner Bar” with 70 other folk and had a nice afternoon with everyone afterwards and a quiet day spent recovering on Boxing Day.

Our daughter and Son were to be here but our Son had a last minute request from work and ended flying out to sort an issue on one of the sites. Our daughter however joined us and it was great to see her ...... our son now joins us on the 25th of this month for a few days.... so alls well that ends well.
Other friends also joined us over the new year and in the last week and we’ve been out on the usual sight seeing trips with them.
New Year’s Eve was spent down with the crowds on Lavente beach and the atmosphere was great albeit it being somewhat chilly on the night. Massive fireworks display that went on for a good 90 minutes as they also ring in the new year at 1am Spanish time for all the British patrons who still think it’s midnight !... so 2 new year celebrations for the price of one !

The 6th of January is the traditional ‘Christmas Day’ when children receive their gifts from the ‘3 kings’...... not Santa Claus like we do back home. The 5th of January sees nearly every Spanish town celebrate the 3 Kings parade and we went to the old town to see it and the town was absolutely jam packed with families out to see it, the excitement on the children’s faces is lovely. We enjoyed a meal on the way home and went down to the beach on the 6th and again it was busy with families out enjoying the festive day.

The weather here has been the usual Costa Blanca fare, chilly late evenings and nights with beautiful sunny days, sometimes in the mid 20’s and usually in the high teens in temperatures. The chilly nights sees our gas usage going up, usually a 12KG bottle being used every 12 to 14 days depending on heating settings and how long we’re in the van in the evenings.

Doggy update....... the diabetics insulin took a bit of tweaking to get the dose right and now she is injected every 12 hours with 0.2ml insulin which is doing the trick and with her new diet she is beginning to gain weight again..... unfortunately she has taken an infection of her left front paw from a cut she got while out walking and is somewhat immobile at the minute, but the vet assures us that it will clear up inside the week.....

So, we’re in to our 3rd month in the sun and will remain here for more visitors arriving and then a slow trip northwards sometime in mid February with a plan for a ferry sometime in March back to Ireland.

And then yesterday we get a surprise arrival, don’t ask me how much diesel it takes to bring an RV here as he wouldn’t tell me..... yes folks... the boss and the mrs, AKA Ally & Julie make an arrival in the Costa Blanca..... and we’re happy to report that the both are settling in well to this lifestyle !

But I really do fear for his wellbeing !

Well, it’s open all year Paddy, something for everyone’s budget, it’s positioned well for visiting other places, superb affordable public transport system, good sites that are set in the quiet outlying areas and of course the great weather is the big draw.

Well, time for an update, nearly 3 weeks since the last one.
Things are going along swimmingly, more of the same really consisting of relaxing in the sun mixed with exploring the area mixed with an odd night out.
We’re making great use of the scooter and we use it to get to areas not served with the public transport system. We’ve travelled up to the lovely area of Guadalast, a bit of a hair raising trip on a scooter on quite narrow and very windy roads, but my word is it worth it..... the area & views are absolutely outstanding, breathtaking actually. We spent quite a few hours exploring the area.

We got talking to a couple of British folks who live here on the site and they told us of an area close to Benidorm worth a visit. So we went up on the scooter to see, the place is a small enclave just off the Finestrat turnoff down a narrow road for 3km. There is actually areas there that a motorhome could overnight on, but the roads are narrow and it would be better arriving late in the evening and leaving before traffic gets on the road. The area is lovely and has a small snack bar/bar there and parking for cars. A really nice area to be out of the hustle & bustle of Benidorm and we’ve been up a couple of times.

Our dog is doing good on the insulin for the diabetes, no problem injecting morning and evening and she’s back as good as ever. Took a while to settle on the new diet but now it isn’t an issue at all...... so happy all round.

So, all is well with the world, we’ve booked a ferry for the 27th February from Cherbourg to Rosslare, but it’s a flexi ticket and we may stretch it a few days/weeks, we shall see.
We will give ourselves lots of time to drive up through Spain and France and spend time at different stops en-route .... with that in mind we leave this area on the weekend of the 16th February and meander up the coast with no particular agenda to stay anywhere...... we’ll make it up as we go along.

That’s about it at the moment, weather is lovely with lovely warm sunny days and ‘coolish’ nights. Site is still 90%+ occupied with mostly British/Spanish/ Dutch and other nationalities, mainly long term overwintering like ourselves.

Next update will be when we move northwards, heading back towards home.

Definitely doing it next year, and had to make just the one concession. Christmas day with the family, but the ferry is booked on Boxing Day, doing a landbridge down to Calais this time.

Well..... what’s been happening ?
As planned we were all packed up and we pulled out of Camping Raco in Benidorm around 10:30am on Friday the 15th February.
Well before all that we met up with all our “neighbours” we’ve grown to know on the site on the Thursday night, had a natter to them all and made a sort of loose agreement that we shall attempt to meet up over the winter of 2019/20 all being well..... and we were waved off on the Friday morning.

Slow meander up the coast via Altea, Calpe, Jávea and Denia and took the toll road to get north of Valencia away from the hustle of the normal roads..... our destination being Teruel (Campercontact 25719) and the aire beside the civil guard building..... we made a couple of stops en-route for the mandatory coffee and to give the dogs (and ourselves!) a toilet break.
Arriving in Teruel around 4pm we were surprised to see the aire was very busy, normally the aire in Teruel is quiet, it is really only a stop aire for those traveling North/South or visa versa. We got parked up without a problem but within an hour the aire was packed full, many motorhomes coming and not able to get a spot and leaving again........ We knew at that stage that there was something else happening in town to attract such a big gathering of motorhomes....... the aire up from the civil guard one at McDonalds was also now getting busy with the overflow.

A bit of googling revealed that a big festival was on in town, we never really went into the town itself on other visits, rather stopped off and away the next morning........ now we realise that this was a mistake..... the town is lovely.
The festival is called “The lovers of Teruel” and it’s a week long event over St.Valentines in February, it dates back to 1217, see The Lovers of Tureul for the story.
The festival takes the form of a medieval theme, everyone dresses up like knights, the focus being on food.... and boy do they do food well.
Cooked like in medevil times, over wood fires on spits and fire pits, and modern food inc the famous Spanish paella is on offer everywhere along with Spanish cheeses and of course the wine. We enjoyed quite a few hours walking among all the stalls, seeing the town and the buildings along its elevated pedestrian bridge linking the two parts of the town across the gorge.

If you are ever in the region then go and explore the town, it’s fabulous.

Saturday we left and filled with diesel and made our way north once more and another stop we know just north of the city of Pamplona via Zaragoza in the centre of Spain.
Pamplona is the world famous city where members of the public partake in the “running of the bulls” See HERE for details.
We weren’t in the market for a bull ! .... so we made our way to the aire to the north of the city at Berriozar (Campercontact 19155) and settled in for the night. Cold at this altitude overnight, down to -3deg but heating on low we were comfortable.
Sunday morning (17th) we were on the road again and soon we were approaching the Spanish/French border at Irun and we stopped and filled up with diesel as it’s much more expensive in France. Roads being quiet we trotted on up through the National park (forest) towards Bordeaux stopping off for coffee a couple of times....

Now, anyone travelling with dogs needs to be very aware that the processionary caterpillars are VERY active February/ March.... from Benidorm right up to almost northern France they are everywhere .... our stops on the way up we were more than vigilant so the dogs weren’t in danger and on lots of occasions we couldn’t let the dogs our of the van because they were present......... make sure you know the risk these pose to dogs and indeed humans if traveling around this time.
A good article is published HERE and should be mandatory reading if you’re taking your animals abroad and need to know the dangers.

Our stop for the night was a French passion site, a vineyard just outside the city of Bordeaux (Campercontact 63213) and a wonderful stop it is. Free to use if you purchase something, €5 if not buying anything..... we made the usual couple bottles of wine purchase and we had a peaceful quiet night with a couple of other vans there.
Monday morning and we were on the road once more up to An aire north of La-Rochelle, it’s on the Park4Night app, a simple car park without services but super sea views. Just one other French motorhome with us on that stop.
Tuesday we move north once again to another Park4night stop in the hamlet of Behuard, a really old French monastic village were we once again had a quiet night. No services but free to stay.

Wednesday and we go up the coast another bit to Juvigne (Campercontact 14227), its an award winning small French “tidy town”, to the aire there, full services, all free.... supermarket across road, large agricultural museum in town but alas not open until April. A very simple and not expensive aire setup, we at home need to take note and learn from the French.

Thursday morning and another little hop up to another stop, this time to a new one for us..... looking out at Mont St.Michael, but not from the ‘touristy’ approach, rather the view from the eastern side.... an overnight stop just down at the bottom corner on the western side of the Cherbourg peninsula.... it’s a Park4night stop, near the town of Vains on the coast..... no services as it’s only a park, but what a view. 10 vans spent the night here and it’s busy with sightseeing visitors as it’s a popular viewing and photography spot for the Mont..... a lovely quiet night in a special place at sunset/sunrise. Even Orla was smitten !

On Friday a short hop up to a place we know we’ll, actually about a mile north of it as our usual overnight spot was full !..... we went to a fully serviced aire for €8 per night including electric at Gouville-Sur-Mer, (Campercontact 11657). A beautiful area here as is all the west coast of the peninsula, lots of vans here, many for the day but full for the nights. We always visit “the shack” ... or to give its proper name...La Cale.....the seafood is excellent, and it didn’t disappoint on this visit either..... just excellent unpretentious seafood served very simply in one of the most beautiful settings ever. Just order the ‘plate de la mer’... a seafood platter.... you won’t be disappointed. If you want white linen tablecloths, silver service then go elsewhere, this is really a shack.... but the best shack ever ! ...See Google map link for details.
We spend Saturday night here too and repeated Friday nights restaurant run !

Sunday we move east and inwards for our impending visit to our vet of choice in St.Lo..... were on an Aire once again in the town of Marigny (Campercontact 13837) where the total cost for services and overnight stay is €2 ! ...... ooooh Ireland, why can’t you be like this !!
So tomorrow of to the vet for 11am and tomorrow night we’ll ‘probably’ end up in the costal town of Barfleur up on the north east corner of the Cherbourg peninsula on the aire beside the sea wall....... another very pretty French town with abundant seafood restaurants.... we may have to sample !
Wednesday we are due to sail on the Stena Horizon at 21:00 back to Rosslare.

Our trip has been absolutely wonderful, from Rural Portugal to the Algarve, from Rural Spain to the Costas and our trip through France once more taking our time...... while we love Spain and Portugal we realize we absolutely adore France with its charm, it’s food and its extensive aire network.....
but for winter sun it has to be the costas and we’ve already booked the ferry for next winter.
Next report back in the Emerald Isle.

Brilliant blog, reminded us of the places we have visited over the years. We had thought of heading to Le Mont on our way home and your story of the shack just cemented it. I have been disappointed so many times with seafood platters.

Well, all back home and settled in and thought I'd post a few stats and update now that all is done.

Miles Travelled : 3720 miles (5988 kms)
Diesel Used : 632 litres at various prices
Fuel Consumption : 26.72 mpg - 10.57 l/100km
Engine oil & water : Nil
Gas used : Lots, lost count ! (approx 110 kg)
Veterinary bills : €1250 (inc special food & ongoing treatment)
Memories made : Priceless

This has been a different sort of trip we have done, our longest extended trip away in the motorhome to overwinter abroad. Some lessons learned, what we would do again.... things we would change.

Really enjoyed the trip, even if the weather didn’t really play ball at all on the first weeks of the journey. Our drive therefore to the Algarve was much quicker than we would have preferred although the countryside was beautiful we really didn’t see it in it at its best. Even the Algarve was cold and quite wet and upon enquiring and investigating we found that it had been that way for a few weeks and the forecast was for more for the foreseeable future...... we made the decision to go east and head for the Costas to the sun.
A couple of days took us to the Costa-Del-Sol and the proper good weather and we now realise that this is the best area to get winter sunshine in Europe.
Later in November we arrived to the site that was our home for quite some time, on the outskirts of Benidorm, Camping Raco is a large commercial site with mostly northern European overwinter stayers. While we enjoyed our time there I found that to avail of a good nightly rate you must commit to 90 nights........ something that we would be unwilling to do again..... the plan the next time is to use one of the ACSI sites and the ACSI rate will be competitively priced to mirror Raco's offering with the big difference being no minimum stay required..... so either Camping Armanello or Camping Arena Blanca fits that bill and in any case Camping Arena Blanca is right beside Raco anyway.
We like Benidorm, it can be as quiet as you want, be as loud as only Benidorm can be..... has wonderful shopping opportunities, good restaurants, great entertainment venues, blue flag beaches and always something to do there and the area is well positioned for visiting lovely outlying towns, its served superbly by public transport, well positioned for family visits and the weather is the most predictable in Europe.... it will be on our list again hopefully in 2019/20.
As on the stats above we found our gas usage to be high.... while the days are quite sunny and warm, even hot at times, the nights are decidedly cold. After approximately 5pm the chill in the air sets in and heating is required to remain comfortable and indeed a low heat setting was mandatory to keep our van comfortable overnight. This may not be the case with a better insulated newer van but our van is quite old and wouldn’t have the efficient insulation found in newer models. We used a 12kg propane bottle every 10-14 days, not too bad I suppose and at around €16 per bottle it isn’t badly priced.

One of our biggest expense this trip was veterinary expenses, our oldest dog developed diabetes while away and vet visits, tests, re-tests, medicines and food soon mount up.... but it is what it is and if we would have been at home I don’t think it would have been any cheaper.... and we don’t regret spending any of it on her... she is fine now by the way !
Maybe something that folk should think about is pet insurance if thinking about extended overseas trips away, but I think most policies are tied to 90 days in any case.

While Spain does have toll roads we found that it is easy to navigate through the country without using them and the road network is in general in good condition with a few exceptions. Portugal on the other hand has a road network that makes it difficult to avoid tolls but on a whole the roads are good there.
Likewise France uses an extensive toll road network, especially from the centre southwards but they can in most cases be avoided but there are a few exceptions where using the toll road is the most efficient way of getting between points. For us France still holds the appeal for motorhome travelling except in a few respects, namely weather & fuel costs. We don’t usually travel in our "summer" months abroad so from September onwards the weather in France can be hit and miss but when it is acceptable nothing comes close to France for a motorhome experience. The aires and the sites are widespread, the country is accepting of motorhomes and the country is beautiful. This view was reinforced by our drive north once again and we enjoyed the French part of the trip immensely and with the weather being kind it made it really nice.

Our trip was for 123 days and it was nice to escape the Irish weather/winter although it hit us with a vengeance on our return. We will definitely do it again.
Our 24 year old van ran perfectly, no issues whatsoever and proves that an older vehicle is nothing to be afraid of and can do the job perfectly well, I do however hear rumblings from 'er indoors' about a fixed bed model..... we shall see!
The other item we found great was our little scooter, its brilliant for getting around when parked up and easily transported on the easylift scooter rack on the towbar of the van and is the perfect solution to our transportation needs.

So, back in Ireland... settled in to the normal routine once more and looking forward to an Irish summer of touring around in the van with the vague notion of a 'plan' forming in my mind for next winter!
