Varta A28 100ahr leisure batteries

 ·

I fitted a pair of matching Varta A28's 110ahr leisure batteries back in February 2011, last weekend whilst in Portumna i got alarm beeping that the batteries were showing low voltage,
I took the batteries out once a year (to have all weight out of the MH for CVRT test) and whilst i had them out topped up with distilled water and gave a full charge with a normal battery charger,

Im happy with the time the Varta's have lasted,

How long do you get from your Battery or Batteries?

Just curious,

I got 8 years out of the Varta OE's. I'm now on year 5 of the Banner Energy Bull's which replaced them.

I took it to be Original Equipment John, I might be wrong in thinking that they were the first day Batteries in a new Motorhome. We will have to wait and see when Colin comes back

OE = Original Equipment

BTW, there's much discussion about the merits or otherwise of leaving batteries permanently on charge, mine are always on charge, either ehu, solar or alternator, except when parked up with no ehu and the sun isn't shining.

I have solar alright but once a week it gets a 5 mile spin if we are not away in it, and id plug in in overnight every 2 to 3 weeks to make sure the batteries get a top up and also run the fridge to keep it in order,

7.5 years is not a bad spell to get so 👍🏻

John, put aside the longevity of the batteries ,I looked at your profile and if it is correct, you're not doing too bad yourself ,you must be the oldest Motorhomer in the country ,if not elsewhere. 98?

I purchased three Varta LFD 90AH, as recommended by AndCcaravans in England.

To be perfectly honest I am amazed at them, I went a week recently and they didn't come out of the green, no idea what voltage as my panel has green amber and red for low. They stayed in green the whole week.

I haven't even installed my Solar panels yet.

We watched TV, we ran the heating - Propex LPG gas heater with fan, charged all the things we charge these days and multiply it by 2.

Early days for them but the best batteries I have ever had, so far.

Well the cold surely vdoes does test the batteries and my one is definitely on its last legs......I've known it was coming to the end for a few weeks now as it is dropping from roughly 12.7 fully charged to 12.3 or so in about an hour with a light load applied like a couple of LED lights....it's a Varta LFD 90 I have in since we bought van 3 years ago, and who knows how long it's been in before we got it. A great battery so I'd like to stick to the same or something similar from Varta anyway. I've had a quick look online and nowhere jumps out.... anyone know where I might pick one or 2 of these batteries up? Closer to Galway the better but always willing to take the van for a spin!!

There is a whole plethora of topics on this subject. Use the search icon and you should get good information. Personally I used Tayna in the UK and they deliver to ROI. Good selection

Have a look at this site,

http://www.aandncaravanservice…change.php

He does not sell batteries, but repairs electrics and chargers etc damaged in use. He has crusaded against false information and has discredited the ncc scheme which recommended batteries without testing them! Excellent advice and lots of info on the outandaboutlive forum by him. He is highly respected and my replacement (whenever that is due) will be guided by his advice.

Thanks John, what ones did you order? The LFD 90 I've been using and found it great for our needs but if there are similar at good price then why not. Would be very handy for me to pick up after work too! What is the price like? I've only 1 battery in the van but I'm going to get two and wire them in parallel so will need a couple of connectors and right gauge wire, I'm hoping Halfords can maybe help there..

They are open til 6 but if you are running a bit late and ring one of the lads will wait if you ask politely,

Autolec on the Ballybane ind est (in opposite Mc Donaghs hardware) is a good spot for wire and connections etc, ask for Jimmy let him know what you are doing and he will look after you,

Are these leisure batteries or truck starter batteries.?
I.v been boating for 40 years and always used standard truck batteries.
I got leisure batteries once and they let me down.
Never had any trouble with the others and they last about 5 to 6 years.
3x 110 amp hr on domestic circuit.

One of my leisure batteries died a while ago and when I checked the other I discovered that it's just a normal battery even though it was replaced by the dealer when I bought the van. With two batteries I'd prefer to have them both the same size and age so I've just fitted two Yuasa (L36=EFB) 100ah batteries. They cost me €285 for the pair delivered to my door from Tanya Batteries in Wales. Expensive but still €100 cheaper than I could have got them delivered from anyone in Ireland. Hopefully I won't be looking for new batteries for a long long time.

The two leisure batteries, or any number in a battery bank, MUST be the same age and specification. The dealer who fitted the one simply wasted your money and his time.
Both your new batteries must be connected correctly SEE HERE if you are to get the maximum life from them

EFB seem to be the new kid on the block, unfortunately Tanya were out of stock when I needed one. I'd be interested to hear how they do in the longer term. Good purchase.

My van only had one leisure battery, and it was a GS battery,I didn't like the look of it,so I just fitted 2 Varta lfd90's,i got them from my regular battery supplier(I got trade discount) €250 the pair, and I didn't have to wait for delivery.
Waiting for the diesel night heater and the solar panels to arrive now,TV arrived today. Expensive business this Motorhoming craic.

The old Varta's live another day,
One sits with the Diesel genny and the other is going to (somehow) sit on the ride on,
Ride in is not 3 yrs old and battery nearly knackeres already (didn't get abused) €80 quoted for a new (little fart of a battery) I thought ill work something with old leisure battery,

Thats wrapped in frost blanket that is used for covering freshly poured concrete, should be ok as it sits in shed all the time anyway,

Yippee.:.:.......I managed to add a pic
