Air suspension

I have used the search facility and have seen a few options mainly people have used kits to alter their suspension. I am considering the full vb 4c system which is around £5k.
Which is a lot of diesel has anyone had this system fitted it ticks a lot of boxes for me except the price.

I had alco air suspension in my last van , my present van has a wider wheel base and it handles as well as the van with air suspension IMO don't bother you have a modern van and shouldn't need air

Negative = cost.
Positives = can increase my carrying weight by 350kg.
Chocks/levellers unlikely to be needed.
Don’t have to worry about rear over hang on ferries and ramps.
Can lower the back corner to put the scooter in the garage easier, I sometimes need to put a ramp under the fiamma scooter ramp to stop the skid pan catching.

My van is my second home, if I was just using it for weekends and short holidays I definitely would not bother but I expect to be using the van for even longer periods in a few years time making it my first home.

We have the VB system on the back of ours and must say it is excellent, it was fitted by the previous owner so I cant comment on how it handled before fitting. it was fitted by David Byrne in Midleton, he did a very neat job, fitted the compressor under the passenger seat.
Regarding the extra carrying capacity Jamie I would be of the opinion it will decrease your carrying capacity as now you have the extra weight of the system and your max carrying capacity is still the same. ok it will ride higher when loaded to the max.

Regarding raising the rear when going on ferries, yes it will but only by a small amount but that might be enough.

Regarding lowering the back corner, ours don,t do that.

By the way are you talking about replacing the current suspension and going all Air? if so disregard all I have said above.

Now is the time to fit it so while the van is new and you will have the benefit of it for a long time.

I had my X250 with Alko chassis uprated from 3500kg to 3850kg by adding “air assist” to the rear axle and changing the rear tyres to 225 wide 15” diameter. (I actually changed all 5 tyres)

It is possible to adjust the rear end height by about 50mm by blowing up the air bags. It also stabilised the ride in cross winds and when being passed by coaches on the motorway. AFAIR it cost about £1500 for the kit, fitting and the 5 tyres.

This link that Jamie posted in his first posting is one the best solution on the market, in my opinion.
The shocks and coil spring are replaced with an air bag setup in the front supension, while on the rear axel the steel leaf springs and shocks are replaced with air bags and axel link arms.
Some people are confusing the above with an "air assist " system, which only fits an inflatable air bag between the chassis and the rear axel. This air bag is inflated to a fixed pressure and it's basic function is to replace the function of a shock absorber by providing a stiffer supension.
From my experience of working with truck design and bodybuilding, an air suspension truck has a higher payload than a steel suspension because air bags can adjust to road terrian far better than steel springs.
The driving experience should be more comfortable and then the benefits of self leveling system for parking up will be seen. My understanding of reading the tech sheet of the VB system is that each corner can be raised by 2 inches or dropped by 3 inches. With a 5 inch travel on each corner, the most challenging terrain will be easy to park upon.
The £5 k price tag is a fair whack of money but if this is a 10 year investment, it's only £500 per year cost.
My only recommendation is when you get the system fitted, ask the fitter to supply a few air tubing repair joiners and a metre or two lenght of the air tubing pipe. In a conversion like this, sometimes the air tubing will snag on a sharp edge, no matter how well that it's clipped into place.
