Dodgy petrol gauge?

Put 40 euro diesel in the van and after a few miles up, I had 1/4 tank driving down the motorway. Came off the motorway, around a roundabout and took off. All of a sudden, the gauge showed empty with fuel warning light on. Straight to the nearest petrol station, put 20 in to see where the gauge would go, and its now showing just under half a tank.
Had a look on line, and it seems it could be a problem with the sender. Anyone any experience of this?

My box was slightly different but solved my problem,
I got a can of contact cleaner in halfords

Edit :Eamon beat me to it

yeah i was looking at that. what i couldnt figure out was at the start the light was on, and at the end, the light was on. Wasnt it?

I think that lad in the clip did the repair and was showing us after,
He might need to throw 20 quid in the tank😉

I took my board out of the box and cleaned the solder joints on the back,
Job sound afterthat

underneath my passenger seat bthere is a lot of wiring John, i think that might be where mine is. Having a go at it in a couple of weeks.

Rule #1 of Motorhomes and Motorcycles: Never ever trust the fuel gauge!

I always fill my tank full and reset the trip meter, that's the best way to really knowing what's up.


It could also be an issue with the floater itself on the tank, sometimes those could degrade and not float anymore which will end up showing as "empty" on the gauge.

yeah Rami, as someone who travels everyday to work on a bike, I understand that sentiment entirely. More than once I was caught out by forgetting to switch from reserve to main tank when i filled the bike. Then no warning just empty. Of course the fuel gauge is fairly accurate, more times than not its just the old " I should get another 10 kilometers out of this. " 7 kilometers later, phut phut phut. No sense, no fuel.

I'm a all year round bike commuter here myself and I know exactly that feeling. Even in my more modern bike with a digital gauge it can go from "you're grand" to "you're fecked" in seconds. I guess the tank moves a lot and it's difficult for the pickup to get an accurate reading :P

My 2001 2.8jtd fuel gauge was only rising to about 1/3 even when I filled it. Would stay there until on the way back down and would work away fine for the last 1/3.... Fine, it worked where it needed to but was annoying me. Spent 2 hours last night pulling the sender (stripped nut on one of the fixing bolts cost me 45 mins....). Got the sender onto the bench and after a good inspection, clean and check on the sliding contacts back in it went. Working for now!

*Tip: if you're going to plug in the pump/sender assembly while it's out on the floor of the van, make sure to plug or pipe the outlet back to the tank. When you turn on the ignition the pump runs and primes the lines. (I've a little diesel to clean off my door......)
