Do you know of or have owned a Motorhome affected by damp?

(They) can build coaches that don't leak, so lets see how widespread the horrible issue of damp is.

Does the industry need to raise its game?

All polls are anonymous

Between that and rust - with mini buses that are fully galvanised amd surviving salty conditions daily... They can cut some of the new crap out of it and solve the other problems !!!

In my opinion they are built with a lifespan in mind, that keeps room for the new ones to keep rolling out at the ridiculous price that they have become.

That's nearly half of us have owned a Motorhome affected by damp. That's simply not good enough!

Is the chance of suffering damp more prevalent in certain designs. The problems I had were just over the driver's head in the front of the Luton bed bit. I thought it might have been as a result of damage from the previous owner hitting trees. The MH was 8 years old , the dealer told me they were having problems with new vans. So much for quality control !

Was at Dusseldorf this year and couldn't believe all the bling, bling, bling on new motorhomes, LED's everywhere, even around a toilet bowl rim (I jest). What used to be a veneer of real wood is now stick-on wood print plastic, even on 'up-market' models.
A friend has a new Hymer with a can-bus system controlling all the living area lights and the system won't even let him add an extra battery or change to bigger batteries.
From a technology point of view, the habitation area of motorhomes are following cars, dealer only servicing or modifications. It would be better if manufacturers concentrated on building real solid units like the 30-year-old Hymers we see still in service.

Rant over ^_^

Nothing is built to last or to tamper with any more? That’s why I love to 2CV they are so simple.

I think they are sacrificing strengthing and decent thickness outer body material in order to put more luxury Stuff inside. If you ever noticed the sawing and swaying of the doors on the tail end of a large truck with four big container locking devices attached, how is something as flimsily built as some new motorhomes suppose to hold together?. Its one of the reasons why I don't think I would ever move away from Van Conversions. I know you get movement and flexing especially the rear doors but there are very little leakage problems from any of the doors and they at least are adjustable

That was my reasoning. I looked at about 7 coachbuilts before I purchased and every one had damp or was going to have damp problems before long. I opted for a van conversion not because I didn’t want space but because coachbuilts have a limited lifetime imho.
Not many factory 4 berth VC so I had to go a lot newer than I initially budgeted to spend.

It is the desire of manufacturers to build and sell mh for under 3500kgs (car licence ) market.
This is been achieved by using lighter weighting materials at the comprise of strength and durability.
The older mh which were heading for 4 ton have with stood the wear and tear of time.

I agree Malcolm, I think vans are not as durable as time gone by. I was at the Bath and West show at Shelton Mallett about 25 years ago and a guy had brought a van from one of the Scandinavian countries built on an Iveco chassis. To show how strong it was he swung back and forth while hanging onto the entrance door. Try that on one of the modern vans

Or even 10 years ago, We went to Dublin earlier in the year to see a 162 reg Benimar 294 Automatic, I really thought this was for us on the way up as it was loaded with extras and it is suppose to be virtually of wood free construction. Anyway to make a long story short every thing was so flimsy, The seating area around the table was so congested, the table itself could be swayed surely 3'' side to side. the shower doors were pity full but if you weren't mechanical minded I could see why you would fall for it alright. I wouldn't swap my 10 year old Knaus in a fit.

I have often wondered about the crash protection in an A Class as they lack the safety cell and crumple zones of a chassis cab.

They should have brought a Silage trailer instead of a recovery lorry to recover that. Not a good advert for Hymer.
