Having the tuning box just fail on my 2.8 JTD Ducato I realised how much I relied on it. It was fitted 14 years ago once the van was out of warranty and have never thought much about it. At the time it was supposed to raise horse power from 128 to approx 150 plus improving torque. It did what it said on the tin and now I realise how good it was. It was a plug in type and I think it only failed because it dropped from where it was under cover into the engine bay where it has got soaked. Anyone got any recommendations for a new one?

Yes seen that one I have been trawling the net, the one I had has no markings or I would have bought another. I was ripped off a few years ago when I bought one from Italy. it came with the wrong leads and by the time I got the right leads and found out it didn’t work I was out of time to complain to eBay or my credit card provider. On hindsight they strung me along with emails and replies until the date lapsed

I prefer a remap than a chip. A guy here in NI made a hell of a great job of our 2.8jtd. NTG might still have his number.

I’d be nervous of doing any of that stuff to be honest. Why wouldn’t fiat do it if it didn’t do any harm to engine, or wear it out quicker

The one we used is plug and play, a 10 minute fit with great instructions, plug out the lead from the common rail, plug it into the box, plug the lead from the box into the common rail, job done. Just find somewhere safe to store / secure the box.

Daffysparks, I had no problems with the one I had it was he same as the one Eamonn is talking about. When I fitted it it really ramped up the power and I got a few more miles per gallon, unless I really horsed on. The power was smooth and progressive and came in about 2200 revs.I have been researching and have a few in mind, I have spotted one that you can set for power or economy, was just wondering if anyone had recommendations. Ally I’m too tight to have it remapped

I have no reason to doubt you, but why don’t manufacturers do it then, if it increases power and fuel consumption. It would seem to be a no brainer.

Lots and lots of reasons. This has been debated on the net for years. Have a search on Google and you'll find loads of varying opinions.

My own experience, more power, slightly better fuel economy although only very slightly. A nicer vehicle to drive.

I will do. I’d be as cautious as fcuk messing with something I’d be taking to Spain and depending on it to get me home again, though. It’s fast enough for me as it is.

Well if Volkswagen can fiddle their emissions, who says any of them map them to the best possible way? :)

Sorry, I've kicked of the debate :)

I did 65000 miles without a cough and would have probably went on to do more except a bit of water got in. It definitely helped me many times climbing the Alps

My MH is still under warranty. Could this be affected if I had one fitted.

Yeah. That's why some people use a chipped box instead of a remap. It can be removed.

Most of the big manufacturers now do remaps of one engine to give varying HP outputs without changing anything mechanical

I've just fitted a tuning box from tdi tuning to my 2010 relay . To early yet to give any real results on fuel consumption , but it certainly drove a lot better in the first run out .I had one fitted before this from diesel express, it lasted about a month , was woeful

Manufacturers map vehicles for a wide tolerance range, fuel quality, servicing frequency, driver types, country specific emission laws etc. They naturally have to account for all these variables when they produce a map and to do that in the simplest way they tend to produce very conservative maps.
Reputable tuners will fine tune the variables and produce a better map that allows better performance and economy if you don't use it to the fullest extent.
Most Euro 6 stuff is already tuned pretty well but Euro 5 and previous engines benefit from it the most imo.
The current range of Fiat 2.3 have outputs from 130 to 180 on the same block with minor variations in Turbos and and intercoolers.

Got it fitted, not sure if it is as good as the old one. The old one ‘kicked’ in at about 2200 rpm. I don’t feel a kick but the guy I bought it from said that it is progressive and won’t feel a kick. I am going to take it to the Colin Road at Ballyclare and rake it up and down the hill there changing the settings. So if you see a Euramobil with the bonnet up today stopped on the road I haven’t broken down. Hodbod it’s from Diesel Express so fingers crossed

First impressions not good. I tried it up the hill without the chip, then a few times adjusting the switches. Didn’t notice any difference. I had marked a place in my mind where I passed at 40 mph in 4 th gear as I was running out of steam. The marked place didn’t change. I had started with the switch at 3 and ramped it up to 7 with no obvious change. It just doesn’t do what my old one did. I had spoken with the guy who I bought it from and he told me it was progressive, I just didn’t feel it. I did think that it might help further up the revs, like 3000-4000 line as I had her up over 80mph but that’s not where I want it. One good thing I had a cup of coffee and a nice piece of banoffi pie at the Misty Burn cafe, previously the Battery Bar.

Well it just goes to show .
If you can't gets chips.
You can always get Banoffi .
But neither helps with fuel consumption or horsepower. :D
