I notice a lot of travellers to France seem to favour the ferry to Cherbourg over Roscoff. Is there a reason for this, or is it just my perception?

It may be the fact that Irish Ferries only sail to Roscoff in the summer last sailing this year is 13 September

Yes its the time of year mainly, but if you're turning left off the ferry and going to countries beyond eastern France, it makes more sense. Mind you, I've looked at both Cherbourg and landbridge to Dunkirk, and there's not a lot of difference in distance, and even with the 17 hour sailing to Cherbourg it's still faster.

Sprinter is right.
Roscoff is only a summer used port by Irish Ferries from May to September.
There is a rumour that next year, Irish Ferries are considering to drop the May sailings to Roscoff, as the new boat WB Yeats will have spare capacity into Cherbourg.

Cheap ferry crossing to France

I fully understand that to travel to France from the UK you have to get there first, Holyhead, Liverpool, Cairnryan or whatever. We are going to Calais on Sunday (we live here) for the grand price of only £58.00.from Dover with Motorhome, on the P&O ferry, less than half the price of the tunnel. So, If you fancied a few days in the UK first and got your timing right it might be worth it. But I'm sure you all realise, Dover is a long way from Cairnryan. Worth a try.

The problem is the ferry price between Ireland and GB. Still cheaper to go direct to France?

09/10/18 to Cherbourg Back on 19th. Flexi coming home . 4 berth cabin both ways £420
Drive from Cherbourg to Dunkirk 340 miles €81 inc €26 tolls

Dublin Holyhead Dover Dunkirk £350
From Portadpwn 510 miles €80

So £470 via Cherbourg
And £430 landbridge

It really depends on the time of the year. My Son and I went to Zurich end of June, We did Rosslare/ Pembroke, stayed there overnight ,then to Dover/Calais and he returned same way. including the pitch in Pembroke, it still was cheaper then the direct route.

Over the years we have used so many different Ferries to get to the Continent. Belfast/Stranraer/Cairnryan/Liverpool Larne/Fleetwood/Cairnryan, Dublin /Liverpool Rosslare/Fishguard Harwich/Hooke, Newcastle/Ijumunden, Portsmouth/le Havre plus a few more I can’t remembe. We now just use Irish Ferries Rosslare/Dublin/ Cherbourg as the short drive on this side makes up for the mileage, time and cost driving through England.
