I have looked at a 2007 roller team 500 with a 2.2 transit engine and a 2007 Cheyenne with a ducato engine.Which of these is the best van ? ,I notice that most 12 year old ducato S have a lot of rust is around the front chassis legs, the newer 2007 model as bad as the older one, does ithe ford have this problem or is it better.
I believe the ford drives better? Any help would be appreciated

I can't make a comparison between the two... but I have a 2007 Dethleffs on a 2.8 Ducato and I have never had any problems with it. I'm just back from a 2 month trip in Europe and it seems that the Fiat Ducato is extremely popular, for all types/sizes of motorhome

Think I would be swayed towards the Ducato too but I heard somewhere that the 2007 model had problems with water ingress in the scuttle panel and can have a very Jittery clutch while reversing. I am sure someone with more experience of them will be able to answer if that is true. Also know some of the Transit models give Engine trouble, I am sure Malcolm will be along soon to advise you better on the Transit.

A-Class 2007 Fiat - fine

coach Built 2007 - not so fine (water ingress)

IMHO of course.

The 2.2 transit and 2.2 Citreon/Fiats of that era have almost identical engines. The Puma I think was a generic term for them.

The 2.2 transit (puma) engine is still being used in the boxer based vans/Motorhomes pre euro6, they have a cam chain so no belt to change which I think the Ducato has. Like all engines/makes there are good and bad stories to be had.

With the Ducato of that age it seems pot luck what engine
In the Tribby forum quite a few have 2007-2009 vans and some have the Ford Puma engine and some a Fiat so best to check although both are built to do over 200k as a delivery van

Yes, but the big problem is, that's over a small number of years. Two or three years.

The 140 hp, front wheel drive 2.2 transit have problems with the injectors. To our expense, our 10 reg transit based mh had a full engine rebuild last year due to 2 injectors failing, causing the pistons to deform and ultimately block failure.
However, I don't know if this was a problem with older models.
Maybe a more important question to ask yourself on the fiat /ford comparison is, about finding a competent mechanic to service your choosen wagon.
A good mechanic will made recommendations about changing certain troublesome parts on an engine before trouble starts.
Malcolm
Ps, all vans suffer with rust, it keeps the manufacturers busy. Treat the rust spots and then reseal the underside with a good sealer.

If you're buying a 2007 FIAT based 'van do check which engine it has.
The new engines, 2.3L and 3.0L, were launched for the 2007 models but the motorhome could have been 2006 stock first registered in 2007 which would mean it would have the 'old' 2.8L JTD engine.
The 2002 > 2006 version of the 2.8L and its gearbox are bulletproof.

There are quite a few examples on the Rollerteam facebook page of stolen Transits of that era so if buying privately, make sure you do all of the checks. In terms of rust, older Ducatos tend to be better than equivalent Transits but if the van has spent time on beaches, salt air, by the sea, on ferries etc, it could be a problem. You need to weigh up the overall package i.e. condition of the coachbuilt and check for damp. Not aware of any rust issues with the X250 model Ducato from 2007 onwards.

Our 2007 ducato slave cylinder went ,gearbox out quite a job ,but looking at the slave cylinder that came out it had rust around it which made the seals fail I put this down to lack of use over the winter months ours is a six speed and I find it very quite and we get good mpg my work van was a transit and after six months it had to be left back with a lack of power some sensors went in the engine, this is a hard one to me it depends on luck ,so what ever you pick good luck
