Sat-Nav app for motorhomers launched

Alk Technologies has launched the CoPilot Caravan Europe, an offline navigation app for drivers of motorhomes. “We’ve taken a great deal of care to create a CoPilot GPS navigation app designed specifically for the unique navigation needs of motorhome drivers,” said David Quin, VP consumer applications at ALK Technologies. “CoPilot Caravan Europe is a powerful and affordable tool to navigate a motorhome throughout Europe, leaving users free to enjoy the drive without worrying about traveling on a restricted road or losing guidance in areas with spotty data coverage.”

I was going to download a truck one for our Euro 16 trip, but it was £149. I've jumped on this because for that money, whats to lose? I'll let you know how it goes.

Would this work on an iPad if I don't have wifi...how does it track your location. I know Sat Nav tracks satellites.
Sat Nav is great but you know when you take a known route different to Sat Nav (which can take you up a back lane to cut off a corner) it "recalculates", and I like idea of this co-pilot not taking you on too narrow roads

iPads and iPhones don't have a gps chip like some of the android devices have, they do the tracking through wifi signals and phone network if you have a sim in your device It may work in around built up areas but once you rural you may have a problem

My husband was very interested in buying co-pilot, but he now says our smart phone wouldn't have enough memory, but happy enough with it as a phone.
He was looking at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin…B00EY3ZSII but from reviews on Amazon ( not sure if anyone has reviewed this particular one on MHC) , it still took you up narrow roads.
He said we will carry on using our current Garmin, along with road maps ...I am the navigator but I think I am getting better over the years (actually Sat Nav does the work). Though we did end up in cobbled streets with concrete bollards and parked cars and lost in centre of Dinan (or maybe it was Dinard) trying to find campsite near Dinan Port.
Last year in France we found Sat Nav was taking us on toll motorways, and by time you realise it, it is too late, fine if you want to get somewhere fast but most times there is a perfectly good road running alongside, though if too many villages reducing to very low speed, traffic lights etc and narrower roads.
We put in "no tolls" on SatNav but never took it off so now back in Ireland when heading up the M1 etc now it keeps taking us off at exits to avoid tolls, once you have gone through toll you find time of arrival at destination alters by about 15 mins.

We had the Garmin Dezl, although a brilliant satnav, it still took us down some stupid roads. It would do stupid things like take you down a road and then warn you of a low bridge ahead, instead of avoiding the road altogether.

Sat nav is great but people depend on them too much. We follow some basic rules for a route we don't know.

Know your rough route
Follow the road signs
It the satnav gives directions which contradict the road signs ignore it.
Use the satnav to take you the last few miles.

I agree and I'm a guilty party. My previous job required me to travel across the whole of the U.K. And I would always use sat nag without checking a map and follow it.
This got me thinking when I put in my former home village in Cornwall when travelling down from up north and it wanted to take me on a route I knew to be slower and longer, so I checked my settings and they were correct but it still wanted me to take another route. I checked with a second satnav device and this too wanted me to take the longer and slower route.
That said I still rely on them too much and probably end up driving further and going through towns that I should have avoided if I'd have checked on a map or even checked the suggested route in advance.
But I really like the idea of a MH friendly satnav as turning around on a narrow road when faced with a low bridge or narrow point can be a real pain in the butt.

Downloaded to my iPhone. Took forever its a very big file. I think it said it was installing 30,000 + POI's. The programme sits in your phone and must work from GPS. Haven't had a chance to properly evaluate, but I put in our first stop in France and it came back in a flash. Even down to cost of fuel!

It is 48.1MB, and it works off the GPS chip so no need for the Internet. I use my CoPilot on my iPad as I have GPS on it.

Thought 48mb was a bit optimistic :)

Just over 500mb, total install, for Uk &Ireland isn't too bad, especially these days.

Thought I found the answer and it uses .ov2 the same as TomTom, but not sure it's the same app, CoPilot live App for Android seems to allow it.

I went with the Sygic App as suggested by JJF and I find it good. They have a camper specific app which allows you put in the height and width of the vehicle. Height definitely works and has been tested :-). All in all i found it good but like all sat nave, it has tried to bring me up some very narrow lanes.

See Sygic Motorhome Version.
Very good app, bit pricey but very good.

Amanda has co pilot caravan sat Nav on her phone, frankly I don’t think it is any better than a standard Tom Tom so interesting to hear about the Sygic version, now I fully accept no sat nav is infallible but what is it like John? Has it tried to take you down narrow or unsuitable roads? Does it take you miles out of the way?
What’s it like in Spain, France etc.
Did you go for any of the extra features?
