Just a little point ref strand camping blog, Irish Ferries price for a motorhome and two passengers going out in October and the return up to end of march is 164 euros each way and 10% off if you book through the club.. Personally after quite a few years of trucking to Spain ,on the Brittany Ferries ,Plymouth Santander, and returning the same way, you need to be a good sailor as the Bay of Biscay is not a nice place when it is rough

I agree it can be a rough crossing but for me it works but completely agree it will not suit all.

Strand, I used to take a couple of good flasks of coffee and a few sarnies on board and it the weather was a bit iffy and I stayed put in the cabin rather than swaying all the way to the cafeteria. Have a nice holiday.

Like AidH, the Cork to Santander ferry is been tossed about here for 2019, because we would be on a 16 or 17 days of a holiday due to my job.
Based on my limited experience of driving on French motorways, our actual travelling time is about 25% longer than google maps.
In short if Mr Google says that the run down through France is 12 hours, it is probably nearer to 15 hours.
Just my thoughts.

I have found the same thing, its never a realistic time frame because its all based on the speed limits, who in their right mind I'd going to drive their motorhome at 130k, its more accurate if you select non toll roads,I tend to just use the distance they give and do my own sums as regards time.
Mr Google also can't know if you are towing and how many pitstop you have to make per child or a how addled the grownups are.
Are we there yet.

Using non toll roads through France I find that I average somewhere between 65 and 70km per hour based on actual driving time. I drive at as close to a true 80kph as possible per the satnav. For an overall daily journey time estimate I work on 65kph and then add 2 hours for stops, meals etc

I know you pay tolls... but we came from Barcelona to Carnac in 14 hours. 1 day, with one driver. Just as well there’s no tachometer fitted 😆

Malcom did we meet you and your family in an aire in Bayeux a few weeks ago on the final night of our holiday?!

(Sorry to go off topic!).

Totally agree- we tend to totally underestimate our driving time, even when using the Michelin Routeplanner. At least with the ferry you're relaxed and on holiday and the kids are a lot less bored than when driving.

To me that sounds like a pretty good price when you compare it with the cost of a ferry to France and driving down

Thanks for the heads up!

We've just booked ours now- €1,591 return for 2 adults, 3 children, cabin, sailing out in July returning August. Delighted with that price as it was coming in dearer when we priced it for this year (had already booked France). Something to look forward to 😀

Jamie, did you book on-line or by telephone?
Getting “call to book” message if I try to book on-line.
Want to get it booked for our return in 2019.

Anybody looked at Brittany offers such as 10 or twenty fer cent off if you book a few days camping or suchlike in with your travel. Might be a nice break on your journey for free.

We booked on line yesterday to return late February. Sorry for the delay I’m on stena Europe now in Fishguard heading back to Rosslare (in the car).
We also bought out from Cork in October 2019 at the same time.

Thanks Jamie, I’ll call them Monday.

I can’t imag they’ve sold out all the pet friendly cabins already so it is probably just a glitch on their part or getting confused with a non return journey starting in Spain.
How long are you aiming to be away?
P.S I’m still up for a pint on the outbound in October and based on my crossing from Portsmouth to Santander a few years back I’ll be walking my dog for most of the 26 hour crossing trying to convince it is ok to go to the toilet on the dog walk deck, guessing I’ll see you there too.

LOL, if our dogs don’t take a dump in 10 minutes they’ll be crossing their legs for a few hours !
We are looking at being away about 14 to 16 weeks, aiming somewhere after middle of February to middle March return... all going to plan.
Hopefully I’ll get the return booked on Monday, I did enter details without pets and got a price !..... so hopefully they hold back a few pet friendly cabins for telephone sales.... if not then we’ll just drive up to Cherbourg and take our time.
I’m up for that pint (or 4) for sure, at the moment we have no set plans from Santander.... thinking maybe a trip through Portugal, out via Gibraltar again and picking up the Spanish coast and be somewhere near Alicante for family flying out to us for Christmas & new year...... maybe Benidorm.

So after traveling out and back would I recommend the ferry?

 ·

I travelled from Cork to Santander at the end of Oct and travelled back at the back end of February.
The crossing out was 5 hrs late. There were approximately 8 MH on board. The food was basic and not very hot but it compares ok to Stena and IF. Cabin was ok again compares ok to other companies.
Coming back only 2 MH only 4 dogs owners mainly Irish lorries and 4 Spanish lorries and about 15 cars so a very empty boat. It was exactly on time.
Neither crossing was rough.
I did speak to the “hotel manager” who stated that lots of crossings have been delayed due to bad weather conditions over the winter.
For me though I think it’s great to leave Ireland and be in Northern Spain in 30 hours and coming back not have to drive through France in February is a real bonus.
Plus Cork is closer than Dublin or Rosslare so for me it’s a great crossing.

25 deg in Bordeaux last week, but you wouldn't have seen that happening while planning a trip, glad you had a good short break😁 in Spain you all got great weather this winter

Pets on Brittany Ferries Cork—Santander MV Connemara? We have 4 cats and I think it would be best to leave them in the motorhome instead of disturbing them and bringing them into the cabin.

Their website says:

"Access to the garage decks during the crossing is forbidden, except when with a member of our crew. There are no pet visits to the garage decks on overnight sailings.

To visit your pet during your sailing, you will need a ticket. To obtain a ticket, present your passport or driving licence at the information desk - your ID will be held securely during your visit.

Please note that, for security reasons, visits are limited to one person per vehicle for a maximum of 15 minutes. For exact visit times, please ask a member of crew at the information desk. Pets must stay inside the vehicle as the purpose of these visits is to check on their well-being only."

Any experience of this? Do they really enforce the 15 minute max? How often can you visit your motorhome during the journey?

I emailed Brittany Ferries and they said: "Please be advised that no pets at all are allowed to stay in their owners vehicles on the Cork - Santander - Cork sailings. Pets are only allowed to be booked into the pet friendly cabins with their owners." MV Pont Aven on Cork-Roscoff sailing allows this.

Although their booking website says only 1 pet per cabin, they said "you can have 3 small pets per cabin so you could travel in two cabins [for your 4 cats] but you would need to make that booking over the phone as you cannot book more than 1 pet online."

So that settles that question.

The reason they dont want the animals to stay in the vans is probably to prevent you wanting access to the car decks and the sort of stormy weather they seem to expect in the Bay of Biscay. Having travelled on it at Easter I can honestly say I have never seen so many chains strapping down the lorries and their trailers.
can you imagine how you would feel if you had left rover or garfield in your van and during a storm the loads shifted and crushed your van!
