So can I fit any type of battery or do I need to stay with AGM.

If you want confirmation see what make of charging system is fitted and call the manufacturer. I called sergeant (who make the one in ours) and gave them the spec of the batteries I was buying. They checked and immediately confirmed they were suitable for the charger.

Interesting thread Mark.

I didn't realise the ambient temperature would make such a big difference.

Have any of you hardy winter motorhomers considered fitting small heat pads to your leisure batteries for the colder months? To extend the Ah capacity? I wonder would it be worth the effort?

Our leisure batteries are stored in an outside locker below one of the seat boxes. I considered adding a blow heating vent into the locker directly above the batteries to keep the temperature slightly higher. It would almost be link heating outdoors which is a bit daft and there are no heating tubes in that particular area. I must say the new batteries performed very well in temperatures of -4°C for three nights so I don't feel that I currently need to heat the box yet.
Time will tell but the batteries are working well so far.

I just purchased 3 x LFD90 Varta Professional 90AH. These seem to be recommended by A & N Caravans.

Tried them for two other batteries. Apparently out of stock and they kept trying to get me to buy their own brand. Waiting for a refund but not sure I will try them again. Looking for the Yuasa EFB first. Didn't think battery haunting would be so time consuming.

It comes to us all.
My pair of five year old Banner Energy Bull (2 X 110 amp) which I got in October 2013 seem to have expired. Not great performance for a 'premium' product.
On Friday night after leaving home where the MH is on EHU, within three hours of parking up, without ehu, the voltage had dropped to 12.2v. Just a few LED lights, the TV and Sky box were running plus the heating. I estimate the total draw would have been in the region of 7 or 8 amps.
I got an EHU for Saturday, Sunday and Monday which papered over the crack.
When I returned home last night and didn't plug in. This afternoon the standing voltage had dropped to 12.4, and turning on the heating plus a few LED lights brought the voltage down to 11.9v as the fan hit its high speed phase, drawing about 4 amps.

It's unclear when they finally gave up the ghost as solar charging over the summer would have been keeping them up and camouflaging their demise, plus our previous couple of outings have been with EHU.

The original equipment Varta batteries lasted eight years and that was before I got the solar, so they would have been getting a harder time. I am now questioning if I should invest about €360 in another pair of Banner batteries.

A pair of THESE for €250 look like a good option, particularly when you consider the performance specifications.

Comments welcome :-)

We didn't have great results with our two 110 Banners. They are still working after just over a year, but not that Impressed with them. I think the platinums we had before that were better.

As I have posted elsewhere, the Varta's we are using now are the best leisure batteries we have owned and I am honestly amazed at their performance.

Looks like a good battery spec.

The jury is out on the Trojans at the moment to be honest. We also draw 5 to 7 amps for at least 8 hours per day. Last run out was 3 nights without EHU and they dropped to 12.2. It was cold though.

Have you spoken to leisure batteries Ireland?
I tried last year. It took several attempts to get an answer and the. Said they would call back with prices and availability but never did.

Then of course, this colder weather will be taking it out on the batteries.

This is a local company near to me, but i wasn't aware of their existence until recently.
I haven't dealt with them but I believe that they are major suppliers into the household pv solar market.
Leisure batteries are listed on their site.
With my leisure batteries only 2 years old, hopefully I won't be looking up theses guys for another few years !!!!!!!!

Absolutely Nick.

The capacity of the battery for Leisure use is measured at the c20 rate which is calculated at 25°c. The capacity is reduced by 10% for very 9° below 25°.

I work it out as 1% per degree to make it easier. As our winter temperature is more likely to be around 5° we can suggest a 20% reduction of declared capacity. Makes our 210amh more like 168 ish.
