Hi Everybody, i recently took on a restoration project of a 1991 Chevrolet MH 6.2 V8. So far so good, but i need to replace the windscreen. Does anybody know any where i could look as google is not helping me. I thought it would be easier than it seems as nothing is showing up on either US or UK sites.

Any help appreciated.

Andy

Have a 6.2 chevy V8 myself, it's an A-Class though so no idea on windscreens.

Welcome Andy.

Look up v8van on facebook. The guy that runs the page is living in Kerry. I think he has a good few van connections in Ireland. You might get a lead on a replacement there.

I had a spare windscreen but i managed to put a crack in it :-(

Let us know how you get on as it'd be good to pool our knowledge about local sources for parts for the G-van (also has the P prefix in some models). GM kept the same Mark 3 body style from early 70's to mid 90's and a good number of the parts are interchangeable. I believe the windscreens are the same the whole way through.

I'd suggest you join one of the Chevy van groups on facebook. They're extremely helpful and have been a mine of information for me, especially when it comes to knowing whats interchangeable and whats not.

FYI I get most of my smaller running gear parts in the US. Summit, RockAuto, Jegs.

I used to travel to the US a lot in a previous job which was handy for buying the parts over the counter. I don't travel so much any more, but the three US suppliers I've listed above offer international shipping. Beware of UK specialists, most I've encountered seem to be the same price or are even more expensive than getting parts directly from the US.

The G-van is very popular in Germany and Holland. Apparently there's plenty of parts suppliers over there but I personally haven't bought anything from that part of the world so I can't advise.

Any more photos of your RV?

Mine is a G35. It's bit older and also a bit of a restoration project.

welcome to the yank-tank club!! :-)

Kevin. you do yourself an injustice  considering the screen play is in progress and they are looking for a lead actor and director. Guy Martin is lined up for the narrator.

I hear Brad Pitt put in a very strong audition, but he wasn't a good fit for the role.

I was contacted this morning by a company in Holland called "Glorydays" who said they could get me a front windshield if I was happy to wait a while. www.glorydays.nl

Thanks for all your advise - I will be following all of these tips up without a doubt.

I am having difficulty loading more pictures of the Chevy

Andy.

I'm no expert, but I seem to recall seeing an MOT/CVRT guideline which showed the area on a windshield which should have no defects. Anything outside that area would be considered acceptable (within reason). Rough doodle below for example only, not to scale.

I'd talk to someone in your local test center first before opening up your wallet if I was you. Unless it bugs you and you want it fixed of course (it would me).

In the meantime I'll have a look and see if I can find that guideline again. I'll admit it was a couple of years ago, things might have tightened up since then...

That’s what I thought too Kevin but I am afraid we are both wrong. The test center knocked our one a couple of months ago for having a tiny crack about 100mm long coming up from the bottom left corner,it was actually covered with the tax disc, when I inquired why it was knocked off my local garage man, he said it was probably on the path of the windscreen wipers. Infact it was a new windscreen that was fitted for the previous test and must have been damaged going in, the crack was on the inside of the lamination and not on the outside where the wipers travel.

Never mind, they've updated it & tightened the spec. My knowledge is out-of-date!! >_< No full-length cracks accepted.

You can find the LCV testing manual here if you want some light reading:

I wonder would autoglas give a quote?

It hasn't occurred to me before as our windshield is OK, but for future "things to worry about", this has peaked my interest... :-)

And would the insurance company cover it with the windscreen damage coverage?

The crack on my windscreen is behind the sun barrier (cream sticker) on top of the windshield. It is behind where the rear view mirrow is but jagged and just peeks below the sticker, but i can imagine it will only get bigger. Thanks for all the info, your advice is really appreciated. I have taken next week off to re-instate the internal walls i stripped due to damp. Dry as a bone now with the hot weather and sealed the roof and leading edges. I have also replaced every screw with new. I will have to take the windows out to re do the walls, hopefully i can re-use the rubber seals - if not any suggestions where i could get a replacement or similar.
