General FYI for travelling around edenderry...

Confessions first - I am riddled with guilt and hoping that posting about it will ease some of the pain.

Theres a bog road between Edenderry and Rathangan, that has claimed the undercarraiges of umpteen vehicles. Even with a lot of care you can be bounced and dropped at a moments notice. It's also narrow, with poor layby areas - and generally a nightmare!!

It's 11.8km long and you'd be forgiven for counting every one of them. Why the post you ask? Apart from being a road built on sponge, dedicated to chewing metal The picture is what awaits you at the end of it.... ! (the google car wouldn't even get through it!)

which will result in 22kms being spent bouncing around your cab and making dust of any delf not bubblewrapped in the press!...to get back to the roundabout - to go the other unrestricted way. It's called Father Paul Murphy street - if you see it on your sat nav, turn!!!!

The reason for the guilt is that I was driving down through it in the car and saw an 07 Rn camper heading the other way but didn't even think of trying to warn them as I was watching the road for shadows of dips! (apologies if you're reading this!) - to be fair, they may well live in one of the houses and knew exactly what was going on - but I couldn't help but feel their pain if not... !

Also - there's one sign - at the roundabout 11km away - but I think it's only on one side of the roundabout! and the only sign...

so there you go.. glad to get that off my chest - and hopefully will save at least one of you the hassle!!!

You needn't think you are getting away with a bit of an apology and chest lightening and public confession's. You'll have to penance.
Someone will no dough come along and suggest something appropriate :-/

Ha, we were in Edenderry about 2pm today and the signpost for the r402 had been turned sideways so we took that road....edged thru the bridge ever so gingerly in our high top vw only to realise that we must be on the wrong road so had to go thru it again!
Now at Robertstown (Lowtown) marina...very pleasant 😎

I haven't heard that but I'd be quietly confident it is!

Killiand, you need to be more blunt with your description of that road between Edenderry and Rathangan.
Here is the no prose version, there will be be no guilt ridden flowerery language.
The bog road between Edenderry and Rathangan is to be avoided because it is like white water rafting while suffering a hangover.
Job done.
Malcolm
Ps, a craicer will never be seen on that road again.

Lads,
I had the misfortune of having to do a call in walsh island en route to carlow from Athlone a few weeks back in the work van (thank god it wasnt the MH) I was carrying about 1.8ton and i was aware of the springs, I came off the motorway and went through Croghan and Daingean.

Needless to say i plan on never going down that road again unless i abosulutly have to.

Thanks for the heads up Killian

Ah sure someone has to teach a kid. If he doesn't learn after the lesson, you can beat him.

Well now... I have direct experience of that road!

In my youth, we lived for a time in Edenderry, (my wife is from there too...) and I used to have to hitch-hike that road on a Monday morning to get to Carlow IT (RTC as it was then). It was a roller-coaster then and still is today. The official name is Fr Paul Murphy St., but locally it's known as the Tunnel Road. As far as I know, it was built back in the day using birch tree trunks as a supporting platform on top of the bog, and these provide more spring than a maple dance floor in the Ballroom of Romance! So my Monday commute (and back on a Friday) involved typically hitching a lift with any one of about 6 or 7 regulars who traveled that road to work, and some of these clearly took delight in testing the springs in their various vehicles... plus of course, the Tunnel itself is at best 2.5M high and probably no more than 2.5 wide, so definitely NOT MoHo friendly! Also, couldn't really think of a good reason to visit Rathangan anyway :-)

Having said all that, I think Killian could have been a better citizen and warned the poor campers what lay ahead, so a suitable punishment I think would be to make the journey from Clonard to Rathangan via that road once more, taking pictures, and posting them here to warn any other prospective travelers of what lies ahead :-) :-)

Ouch! yep it's possibly the worst road I've ever traveled (in Ireland anyway...) won't EVER be bringing the motorhome out there!

Used to be good fishing on the canal that runs over the top though ....

Yet to try the fishing - it's been pretty decent between clonard and hill of down!

Worst day on it - I caught a bump on the motorbike and nearly pulled a somersault over the handlebars... Needless to say the speed came swiftly down for the remainder!

Well apart from the small matter of, in my youth, I came off a Honda 50 going round the bend on the way into the town... a case of ambition outpacing ability :-)
