I am thinking of buying a new TV for the house. We already have a 42" LED one in another room so have a bit of an idea.

I get the impression that plasma is being overtaken by LED. I see there are many smart TV out there too. Are some browsers better than others or are they all the same?

Do I go for.
Plasma or LED?
Smart or not?

deffo LED & smart would be useful, but not 3D (a passing fad)

plasma would use about 3 times the power as well.

IMHO :)

I agree with Nipper, as for the smart thing you need to ask yourself would you really use it or is it one of those things its nice to say you have it. I have a Samsung freesat box with youtube, iplayer and it links to the media on the pc, I have to say in approx one year of owning it apart from the novelty at the start I havent used the features more than 3 or 4 times.

Some of the smart tv's need to be conneted with a wireless dongle which is usually extra, otherwise you may have to run extra cables to the tv. Remember when looking around that if the tv is for sports the higher the hz rate the better.

I've found that plasma still has the best refresh rate and quality of picture pound for pound. BUT LED is getting there. You're right, it wont be long before Plasma is totally out classed. If you're not particular about a super high definition picture then LED would be a good option.

We have a 40" SHARP LED telly and its not great considering the price we paid for it.

Would be LED for me for it's power consumption and different to those above it would have to be a smart TV with 3D.

I think 3D is here to stay, they have all these technologies and give them to us in dribs and drabs :)

TV needs to improve and work with the internet as it is losing it's appeal rapidly.

IMO of course;)

Thanks for the great replies.
A few suspicions confirmed too.

There are some great deals out there at the moment but I need to wait until I get a bill for the car which has been giving bother.

Thanks again guys.

I'll buy a 3D telly when they've figured out how to do it without having to wear the 3D glasses...

As Ally says I was told yesterday that no glasses 3d TV is due out any day.
I can't see it being in my price range anyway.

The TV I am planning on replacing is well overdue retirement. I have been saying for the last three year "when it breaks I will replace it" but it just keeps going. LOL

Currently using a 50" Plasma, heavier on power consumption but helps heat the room so the energy ain't lost :-) just transferred to another type. Replacement if its a couple of years away most likely LED when they have it as good as plasma. decision then will be how big prob 60" cant go smaller lol

I know that story.. The telly we had before the LCD one was a big ol 29" Beko CRT I bought in 1992. In its later years, to turn it on you had to push the power button and give it a sharp slap in the top left corner... We did that routine every day for about 2 years before I eventually caved in and bought the new telly....

try getting someone to repair TV's.

my neighbour worked for himself for years before giving up. He said there was a sever lack of parts for older CRT models and very few people want to have anything repaired any more.

As for the size of the TV screen, I don't need anything over stated... You know what they say about men who need to buy everything large....

Is that why Everyone likes a big screen at the cinema Mark :P , We just prefer to put a big screen in a big room, but whatever floats your boat.

Big room too? like I said.. LOL....

In all seriousness, we don't need a massive TV.
It would just look ridiculous in our house and we don't really watch enough of it..

As Robbie says, if I want to see something on a big screen I can go to a cinema..

Very nice Ian. I must call into the Sony shop too. Always great quality.

Might just take the Motorhome to France instead of buying a TV. LOL.

Blag - get your money out :)

The 3D TV without glasses was just on CH4: Stephen Fry's gadget man. It uses a small camera below the television to track up to nine pairs of eyes and works in reverse by producing the 3D image that suits your eyes. Amazing.
