They say you've got to take the bad with the good...

Bad news first - in time honoured tradition (3rd year in a row) I have found an issue of reasonable concern on the eve of the CVRT... I was poking around in the van trying to find my engineers cert from 2 years ago (just in case) when on the top shelf of the wardrobe my fingers reported back to my brain.. "That's water there mate"...! it appears the cable coming in from the satellite dish (or the screw/bolt is letter water in... I'll do a proper investigation this week when I get a minute and add some photo's.

The good news is... We passed the CVRT :D with just two advisories -

#1 The front tyres will need replacing before next year.

#2 There was a bolt missing from the passenger seat, that should be replaced. I told the tester that was because I'd had an ejector seat fitted for her good self... :)

well done on passing the test. And like you, another problem has reared its ugly head once again for me.
Clearing out the cushions from the overhead bed to let it air, when i noticed light mould on the bottom cushion.
Cleared it all off, found damp. Bad damp.
So, after arranging the spray job, changing the engine, getting the flooring done, I now have to fork out to have the damp issue sorted before it gets worse.
Talk about a money pit ffs.

well i think its fair to say, i bought a pig in a poke.
Initial quote for work on damp area, between 2 and 2/1/2 k. got a call to say it could be 3k.
Final estimate TEN THOUSAND FFS.
I said no way, forget it. im picking up the camper on staurday and taking it back home. Cant believe I got sold this heap, but only myself to blame.
Need to regroup and give this some serious thought. Either scrap it after all i have done to it, or find some way to make it work.
Absolutely gutted, but a local lad when he heard that start laughing and said bring it down to me, ill sort it.
So hopefully I will have a solution. I will know more next week.

Bad news indeed.
But.....
Let’s get another opinion.
It’s bound to be fixable, I’ll pass you on a contact if you want to talk to him?.......
10K is just stupid, your original quote will sort any issues I’m sure.
Chin up, don’t throw in the towel just yet.

Thanks Jon, I m going to let the lad i know look at it, see what he thinks. Im not ready to lay down just yet, and the response I got here is uplifting. One way or another, I think it will be sorted.
Again, thanks for the input.

That is some bucket of wee wee. Go and collect your van and bring it home. Stick a electric fan heater into it and hire a dehumidifier for €50 a day or €200 for a week. 4 to 5 days will dry up all the moisture.
Then get out with the step ladder and check the joints between the roof and walls along with any other trims joints and sky lights. Use the backside of a Stanley blade, not the cutting side. If the blade fits into a gap ,your mastic has broken down and the water is seeping in.
Then you have a choice get the trim removed and resealed, a big job or prise the trim away from the body with a screwdriver, scrap away the dud mastic, apply fresh mastic and then tap the trim back into position with a small hammer.
A tube of non setting mastic will be less than €20 which should the whole roof.
Also have a read of "Blag" restoration project for just the last few months, as he highlighted about fixing damp spots.
Oh before I go, stick a good quality tarp over the roof of the camper as soon as you get it back when it parked at home as this will keep the rain off it.

Time to cut and run in my opinion.

Sell it to someone as a project and put your money into a newer, more modern camper and enjoy it rather than wondering what is going to go next.

That's just my €0.02 worth.

Well said Malcolm, just get it back as soon as you can and cover it straight away. Open any panels etc and let it breathe a little dehumidifier and a bit of heat will change your outlook. All that’s wet is not rotten, wait till it’s dry then see what sections it’s coming in from. Could be the skylight seals or roof seals. They can all be fixed, no big deal. Wait till it’s dry , you will have a better picture then, but make sure it’s covered as soon as possible. J.

Alright Pablo,
Got her back. Got the local lad to have a look. He went through it front to back, couldnt find any thing other than the area in the overhead cab and a slight bit of damp on either side. He assured me,100%, that the sides and back were sound. Considering I was told be careful driving it back, Its not safe, I found this very strange.
He couldnt see 10k worth of work in it, naturally, and he more or less has it sorted.
To be honest, im a bit surprised that I had the bejasus frightened out of me with the price quoted. Although I have been 100% guaranteed the van is sound, I am now paranoid about it.

When you put the dehumidifier in, it's a good idea to take out the cassette and shut the flap, plug the sink and shower outlets, close the fridge, generally, close or cover up any outside vents like the fridge and turn the cab heater vent to the recycle position, you only want to draw the moisture from within.

Wifes bro in law was told his mh, which is on a sprinter chassis, needed two new front struts as those in were well beyond their sell by date and were 'dangerous'

He didn't get the work done as it was outside his budget. Two CVRT's and a Merc main dealer service later, no one has mentioned the issue :-/

It's good to hear that Rob,s blood pressure has returned to normal levels again.
The wild quote was either, put a saddle on me and ride, or they didn't want the job and hadn't the balls to be honest.

Loads of good stuff :D

Great news, glad you got a guy to sort it at a reasonable cost...... now go out and enjoy the van.

Some businesses go out of their way to not do a job, usually with horror stories or inflated quotes, so don’t let that put you off the van and enjoying and using it fully.
Have a blast at the upcoming events.
