There’s a Ballybeg road just outside Ballymena where there is a constant battle between the local council and local pranksters who keep putting white paint over the “Y”. 😬 It says “Ball beg road” more often than not..

Just had a look on Google maps and sure enough... pranksters must be running low on white paint though..

Although to be fair a quick search on Google maps shows the country is full of “Ballybegs”.. 😬

Balla beg could be ‘baile beg’ in Irish which means small town, or as stated by someone else, it could also be translation of ‘balla beg’ which would mean small wall.
That’s my tuppence worth!

I thought that too until I looked up to be sure.

I'll have to dig out my Dictionary of Hiberno English by Terrance Patrick Dolan

A ball bag will always be a ball bag and no amount of translation will ever change that, and that is my tuppence worth😁👍
