A frame Insurance

Has anyone an update on Stoney's post of May 2015. He was having trouble getting insurance for an a frame. I'm in the same boat now, Dolmen say AXA won't insure it even though the guy I bought it from second-hand has been insured for years with Dolmen on this very a frame. I've seen a lot of towing behind motorhomes on an a frame so someone must insure this system.

Any help would be appreciated.

From what I am led to believe all Insurance Companies now refuse to insure A Frames.

There possibly not legal anymore , maybe check with RSA everything is going on the back of a truck or trailer , or towing by lifting the front wheels up

Dolmen refused me for my http://www.smart-tow.com System, so I went with Adrian Flux.

They were actually cheaper than Dolmen.

Not sure if they cover Northern Ireland only though.

Thanks for the replies. I’m devastated because I won’t always have my hubby with me and I was delighted with this system. Have everything ready to go except now can’t get insurance. Is Adrian Flux a broker? I’ll give him a try. Thanks again.

Is the issue that trailers over 750kg need to be braked? I see the smart tow unit linked above has a braking system.

There is nothing being posted on any of the 8 other Uk forums that I frequent indicating that this is a problem or that A frames are now illegal. Probably down to the brokers.

Here is my thoughts.
Our MH is a 6.5 metres long chausson based on a ford transit. 2 years ago I fitted a towbar onto it and then got it certified by an auto engineer. After reading his report, I noticed that there was a 1000kg weight limit for towing. After raising the question with the engineer and pointing out that most builders do have multiple tons behind their Transit, he explained that because of the longer body on the motorhome, the towbar is further away from the centre of the rear axel and this in turn allows an overloaded trailer to jack knife easier.
Using the same logic, it beg the question, do you know the safe limit of weight to tow behind your motorhome?
Insurance is all about risk management, and if there is a grey area, they will quote a stupid figure or refuse to quote.
The second point is that, you are modifying your tow car and in turn will need nasi type approval
