Waiting in the Aire at Cherbourg for tonights IF sailing I've had a look at the costs of the Spain/France border to here part of my route.
Toll as far as Bordeaux = €20.10
Bordeaux - Nantes (tolls end) = 40.00
I had the time so took non toll route for that section.
Total distance = 865kms
Fuel cost depends on mpg and price per litre.
Current average price in Spain = €1.16 (Cespa, Irun)
Current average price in France = €1.35 supermarkets, €1.45 ordinary service stations, €1.55 motorway services.

Do the sums and compare cost of taking ferry to Spain.

See screenshot of recommended camping-car route and toll cost below.

For me it’s about the convenience, and pet friendly cabin, yep it’s more expensive to cross from cork to Santander but driving in France in Nov is no fun and we find it’s not just diesel that is more expensive in France food shopping is also a bit more. So we would rather save the 4/5 days it normally takes us driving in France and get straight to Spain.

Exactly. And the entertainment on Stena is hardly very entertaining so don't think you'd miss it to be honest lol.

We travelled down in late October.

The day the ferry got into Cherbourg we overnighted in the Aire at St. Brice en Cogles
Next night it was just north of Bordeaux at the Aire in Saint-Romain-la-Virvée
The third night we were at the Aire in Marcilla, Spain (150km south of San Sebastian)

The driving was not 'hurried' and we arrived before dark each day.

I'll be heading back on this ship sometime in June, I was supposed to be on the inaugural sailing out off Cork last week but it was cancelled. I'll let you know what she's like.

We took the Oscar Wilde from Rosslare last Friday. Normally 2 days will run down France to the border of Spain.
This time we went to Nantes. Poiters. Limoges. Toulouse and straight over Pyreenes down to Salou and a bit further south. About 4 days driving non toll .
Booked out in August again but no return booked as Oscar Wilde is in for service next winter I think. 28 deg here today . Just glad of some warm.weather after our iffy winter and spring.

There is a post on FB from a person who came back from Spain.
In short; no lifts but there is an escalator to the 5th floor. WiFi poor and maybe chargeable (I could not understand what was meant) no TVs working for the journey, bar not well stocked, cabins only have 2 pin plugs, restaurant was self service and not open at all times.

So pretty much what I had expected.

The poster also made an allegation the MH was broken into during the crossing.

Yes it sounds strange entry via roof light, toilet used, small amount of cash taken, exit via passenger door, approximately €70/80 of damage.

It’s not a concern for me as security on vehicle decks is normally great.

Was the van parked out on the open deck or on one of the car decks?

That report was true the van was entered through the toilet/shower roof light, which was pulled off, it was reported to the ferry company, the theory is someone waited on the car deck then climbed up the ladder and stayed in the van overnight.
the van was only being brought back for its DOE and was booked back to Spain the following week.

I sailed from Santander on Thursday afternoon on the Connemara arriving in Cork around 7 o'clock Fri evening. The trip was fine, it got a bit lumpy around 3 am but by 8 o'clock it had settled down to a long rolling swell which flattened out as we neared the Irish Coast. I had an outside cabin which was very comfortable and slightly larger than an inside cabin on the Pont Avon. Food was pretty much what you'd fine in any motorway/roadside cafe, good but nothing spectacular. Four or five choices for dinner at around €12. Seating is mainly chairs with some plastic / leatherette covered couches, not very comfortable for sitting for long periods. Small bar with two tv screens and same type of seating. One small overpriced shop near reception and a few gaming machines. The decks looked disgusting with chipped paint and paint splatters and over-spray everywhere. A lot of the decks were cordoned off as they were painting them and would eventually get the lot done. I'm surprised this wasn't done in dry dock which would have given a far better impression and given passengers a lot more deck space to stretch their legs. Boarding and disembarking were no problem with friendly and helpful staff. No electrical points available, only three phase. I'd travel on this ship again and have no worries whatsoever but as you'll probably be spending a lot of time in your cabin I'd recommend an outside one. Bring your own entertainment, lap top, tablet, books or whatever you'r into. A bag of snacks and or a kettle wouldn't go astray either.

I heard of this advertised on newstalk holiday slot around 3 months ago .I went to the ferry website and just picked a random date in October for a return trip , just to get an idea on price . Cant remember the exact dates but it was as if we were going for 2 weeks . I got a price of €460 for a Citroen Relay camper and 2 passengers

After seeing the quote from Brittany Ferries for hodbod, I thought I would look. The last listed sailing back to Ireland is 4th Nov. I selected a date in early Oct outbound and return Nov.

Van is 6.9m long x 2.9m high. Two passengers in a cabin is an eye watering €979. I think I will have to stick with Irish Ferries (€458) who are always the cheapest route (including Stena) to the continent for us. Don’t think the potential savings in time and fuel compared to Cherbourg evens things out. Besides I like the meander down through France and we have no time limitations.

I wonder when bookings for summer 2019 will become available, dying to book this for next year. Facilities and services sound v similar to Stena who we've used for the last 7 years and have no issue with. With 3 young children and a limited 2 and a half weeks holiday, it's a no brainer for us. We love the ferry so hopefully the 26 hours will fly in!!

We did St Sebastian from Cherbourg a few years ago and it was lovely but as the kids get older it seems to take us longer to pack up and move along the next day lol. Plus by sailing directly into Santander we'll have more time to explore more of Spain. Looking at France for easter purely to do the WW2 sites as we're always chasing the sun in the summer. Prices look great for easter.

Have you rung them?
When we booked for October the website did not show any availability as it hadn’t quite gone live then, we booked on the phone.
I paid approximately €600 one way 2 people 7.4m MH and a pet friendly cabin Rosslare to Cherbourg would have been about €200 for end of October crossing but €400 and 1000 less miles in a cold and wet France in Nov swung it for me.

Just checked with Brittany ferries via phone, they expect 2019 crossings from Cork to Santander to available end of August or September. I’ve asked to be included on their mailing list.
