How do all you RV guys empty your big black tanks?

I know nothing about them but have seen that they empty through a large hose, so how do you empty that at a Campsite?

How long until you fill a tank?

There were a few posts on this on motorhomefacts some time back. The tank seems to incorporate a macerater which obviously reduces everything to a 'soup'. The info that was posted indicated that the owner uses flexible pipes and simply pumps into a disposal point either on an Aire, a site or a proper sewer manhole if you can identify it. The poster then rinsed the pipework by pumping out the grey water tank eliminating any spillage when the pipe or pipes are removed fo storage.

I can't remember the capacity of tanks but they were obviously much larger than your average Motorhome cassette. I think capacity was over 100 litres but I guess it depends on the size and axle weights of the vehicle.

How long does it last? How long is a piece of string? My dog swallowed two bits of string and they later came out tied together.

I sh*t you knot.

Cheers Davy.

Thinking of a few campsites we visit, a hell of a long hose would be needed. I suppose in worst case scenario it could be put into a recepticle and carried over.

I will see if I can find a link to that thread. With a large capacity you could even wait till you get home, and I don't mean crossing your legs!

Our RV holds 30 gallon of black water as they call it, we have never managed to fill it while away, so always empty it at home, you can buy a macerator pump and then you can pump the tank out uphill if nessary or as we do lift a manhole cover and either position the valve outlet over it or connect up the discharge hose, they expand, ours reaches 30' then finish with the grey water to flush the hose out.

Met a couple in Spain last year and they used a macerater system Stand alone pump with a very large pipe to the drain.
Met another couple with similar loo system and they used a caravan type waste unit with wheels just transferred, thought it could have been a bit messy if the waste valves not lined up?

Considered a Macerator and might go that way, problem with that is, still need to move the van.

The waste unit isn't really an option for what I said above and also the fact my outlet is very very low, not a lot of room to put anything under it, would need to put the van on ramps to empty loo.

Think the only options are the macertaor or change the toilet.

Hi Ally, bit late on the thread, I've used a macerator for years as well as the normal 4" dump hose. Never had a problem with iether despite being on sites for 1/2 weeks at a time, never had to move the bus, just have a lone macerator hose. However, don't empty by macerator only as you'll get what is know as pyramiding...... Not fun, I tell ya.... I'm hoping to go to Carlingford in March, I'll fill you in on any questions re: RV's no prob. ;)

I had a Chausson Bora with a holding tank. You could go for ages (literally)without emptying it. It didn’t have a macerator but a large bore valve that you could attach a hose to. The hose had to be thoroughly cleaned after use which was a pain It has its pluses but the minus is you have to be able to get close to a drain if there is no dump point. There was also a knack of getting away from it quickly when you pulled the lever to dump. Once when full I tried to dump some into a bucket, not a pretty sight.
