If going to Portglenone forest, follow the signs for fishing, not the forest 🇧🇭 :-)

Realised this is a bit misleading. If you are at the Aire and cross the bridge to visit the forest, above is correct. If you are coming from Randalstown side then there is a different entrance into the forest.

Great place!! Facilities are amazing, had a shower there on Saturday, if you do, let the water run for ages for it to get hot. (must add that to the review)

We stopped by after reading all the reviews. Weren't disappointed, best place we've ever stopped. Even the local pubs were ultra friendly. Kathleen the lady that runs the aire is a gem, so very helpful. :D :D :D

Stayed again last night, surprisingly I was the only one there. Kathleen was saying that the 12th weekend is probably their poorest attended weekend. So if you're looking somewhere great to go and are worried that it would be fully booked then head to Portglenone.

Are the streetview co-ordinates in the review correct? They appear to show the aire in the back of beyond nowhere near the river.

It was done on a street name not coordinates, the craic map is correct though. I must put the cordinates on the review when I get back on the Pc.

Stayed in the Portglenone Aire for 2 nights based on the reviews on here. Great spot, £10 per night for EHU and access to tiolets, shower and TV room. We were made to feel very welcome, Kathleen is a star. A good walk out to the forest and back made up for the wine consumption. Recommended.

Portglenone Prebook

 ·
Posted: 03.03.2018  ·  #33
Word of caution, before going to Portglenone it is wise to phone and book! It has been brought to my attention by two motorhome users who travelled quite a distance to be there arrived early on Friday morning the find that although there was no vans there the site was all prebooked.!
I took the matter up with the council and after several emails and phone calls they confirmed they are using a booking system. So sorry to say this site us now really a campsite with restricted access and prebooking , though a good value campsite and stopover so phone and book if you want to make sure you can get in.

Ridiculous, not shocked however if that's the case.

So if it's now become a campsite I wonder do they have planning permission for a campsite. We would be first to fall foul of most councils rules if we tried to bend them a little.

When does an Aire become a campsite and vice versa?

This has always been the case here. We went to stay 3 years ago and ended up staying in the carpark as the Aire was fully booked.

Review just in on the App:

"The barrier to the Aire parking and service points was closed and extensive work was underway. No information to say how long before re-opening... be warned."

What are they up to now? we maye have to remove this as an Aire as it seems it no longer is.

They have been waiting to sort the water supply issue out.
NI Water insisted that the two water supplies (fresh water tap and toilet rinse) had to be separated even though both had a non return valve.

Pity they didn't inspect it during the build rather than after 12 months of operation.

The current work is probably to sort that out and in true council style they do it at the start of the tourist season.
