Info on Gas required

 ·
Posted: 07.10.2014  ·  #1
Hi All,
my van had a full bottle of Calor Gas 7kg Butane in it when I bought it. It has now run out.
It also has a half bottle of Camping Gaz type 907 size butane. 2.75kg
Can anyone recommend a place that sells these in the south of Ireland in the Waterford area preferably?
I have regulators for both but would prefer to stay with the 7.5kg Calor Gas.
Regards,
Ger

Tristan, we have been using Butane since we got the Van without any problems. Is it possible to just change over to Propane or do you need a different regulator or jets etc. Current regulator is the Kosangas type.

Unless it's very old , or has domestic household appliances , it should be fine . It;ll actually run better on propane , it's a better fuel .

All you have to change is the pigtail (pipe between the bottle and the regulator).....and you are ready to go. :-) :-)

That pipe should be changed every 5 years max as a precaution , or if the date is out on it , so as Pogonogo rightly suggests , no harm to change the pipe. Was there ever a gas test done to make sure the reg is still flowing properly?

Thanks Tristan, that has just reminded me to check the orange pipes to see what date is on them. For the little cost to replace them its well worth it to be safe.

If you change from Butane to Propane you need to change the pigtails as the bottle connectors are different .

You tell me, you were the last to work on the habitation side of the Motorhome. :D
I bought a new hose for it before we went to France and what did I do with it? I put it on the new Cadac we bought.
It is two years since you did the Habitation test but we never had any problems from it, I think I will stay with the Butane, it is much easier to get hold of.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Sorry I did not reply sooner but I was away for a few days.
Will try Phelans in Dungarvan. Never even thought of them :D Thanks Shivster!
When I bought my van 2 years ago it had Butane bottles aboard. It is 25 years old so I have no idea if any pipes were changed, Do I need or replace any pipes. My regulator has about 2 ft of fairly new looking blue hose on it. Don't see any pigtail?

The rubber type hoses should have a date stamp on them, didn't know you could get blue, I thought they were all orange.

The appliances are suitable for both propane and butane . Most regulators are too , but it should be marked on them, , the pipes too . Propane is available in the standard Calor style , jumbo adapter clip on connection , you just need to ask around..

No Eirebus you can use propane for domestic appliances but the cylinder must be located outside and not in the house. At least that was the regulation I was a gas filter before I came into the ministry. I think they call them Gas Technicians now. Tristen will be able to confirm modern day regulations but in my day propane had to be piped to the appliance with copper piping.

Afaik jack the copper piping applies to the large propane cylinders only. I know it's in Spain but they have very tight regulations regarding gas and we have copper piping to all the appliances but orange flexi to the bottles and the regulator. The main house has the bottle in an outside store but that was because we didn't want it in the house, but the apartment it's inside. All passed and certified. You have the choice of butane or propane as they are both the same bottle, it didn't matter which.

Propane outside as said , and with metal piping from the bottle inside ., by my ref to domestic appliances , I meant that they usually have different jets for Butane and Propane , whereas MH appliances will work on both without adjustments.

The ex Calor engineers I trained for my RGII/Gas Safe with reckons that the common yellow cylinders of Butane we use are really only for use in apartments on the likes of SuperSer heaters..

as these pics show , This (typical) pipe is constructed to the British Standard BS 3212 that we adhere to , and this pipe was made in June 2012 , so it is due to be changed in June 2017.
