Door not closing properly

Oh have a question if anyone can help. Fiat 2.8 JTD. 2003. I just parked the van and went to close the drivers door. It didn’t catch and just opened again. I tried it a few times and it eventually caught. It happened again and would not close again. I tried to lock it with the key manually but the button would not go down. The button on the passengers side would go down. We are in -8C at the minute could this be a problem. On the way here I stopped at a garage and tried to close the door and it wouldn’t close, I thought I hadn’t pulled hard enough. Any thoughts

PS please ask only simple questions

Tommy the striker may have moved .
Check if its loose.
With the door open ,Use a screwdriver to push in the latching system in the lock and see if its locking .( there is usually two positions ) check if the first one holds , then push it in further. if they hold pull the handle and they will release.
If they hold then its likely that the striker has moved inwards , adjust the striker out fully ,and see will the door closes . then adjust it in a little at a time until the door is sealed with no play when pushed inward .
Try this first ,before going at the electrics

Thanks Sprinter. I will have to check in the morning it is absolutely Baltic here. Her indoors won’t let me open the door and let the heat out/cold air in. Now when you mention it there is no feeling of anything catching when I close it. It is closed and working at the minute and I have doors wired shut for the night

A Blow torch! WD40 might even freeze, but worth a try.

I would say that there is frozen moisture in the latch or barrel. If you have a non electronic key, heat the tip with a cigarette lighter and then place it into lock. You may have to do it a few times. It will save you from having to remove panels and trim.

If you have a working hair drier or blow heater try reaching it out and warm up the door lock if it needs thawed out,be careful not to scorch the paint work.

We have just come out of the cold area and the door is behaving. I will give it the once over when we get home. I had a few of the hatch locks freeze but they have sorted themselves out now. Good job as I need to get into lockers to store the wine
