On age alone I would say yes

Honest John UK would say replace every 3years .
also replace the water pump at the same time ,as if it let's go you will have to do everything all over again.
your are only going to pay the extra now for the pump.

The service manual states, max 192,000km, or 4 years with heavy duty use or at least every 5 years.

Lying about doesn't mean they don't perish with age, its a gamble going over the 4 years TBH, as Clint says "do ya feel lucky?"
If it breaks or strips teeth your engine will suffer and your wallet as well.
Just look at the post on here where a belt failure has cost people a lot of heartache and ruined holidays.

Bear in mind that many Motorhomes could be a year old or older before they are on the Road and first registered when calculating the age of the belt.

Don't know about the X250 engine and later versions, BUT on the X244 engine from 2001 the water pump can be changed without the need to interfere with the timing belt.

That would be expensive. Main dealer done mine along with a service and repaired oil leak and changed rocker cover gasket for €720

Considering that I got a transit engine rebuilt and fitted for under €2,000, the price for doing your timing belt seems like highway robbery. Garage labour rate is about €40 per hour ex vat ( a rough average across the industry ) and any mechanic should easily do your work in a half day.
Just my thoughts,
Malcolm

A belt only can be got on micks garage from €55.99

I see no reason why you would need to fit a full kit on a low mileage Motorhome, we took our last Motorhome with only 30000km to a certain Motorhome dealer for a timing belt and a service and was greeted with a bill for nearly €900, the madning thing is I could have changed the belt myself for around €50. he did a habitation test which I never requested and fitted two new rear brake cylinders which were only around €30 and I had no problem with that. I would never take a Motorhome again to a Motorhome Dealer for Mechanical work, a commercila mechanic has far more experience working on the base vehicle.

Are you sure of the price as it seems like Highway Robbery at least Dick Turpin wore a mask. Have a look at Mister-Auto .i.e I have been using them for years from suspension stuts, exhausts, brakes and all the oils and filters. Their price is 36 euros for a belt and you can get a kit which contains rollers etc if you want to do a complete overhaul. Any mechanic worth his salt could do it. I remember reading somewhere that Fiat was recommending something like 40000 miles but Peugeot was 60000 they were both the same engine.Have a look at the UK sites such as Motorhome fun or the Fiat club where you will get a lot of info.

Just looking at the invoice for my last timing belt change on 05/08/2015.
FIAT Professional Service Centre, labour €75 per hour + VAT.
Total hours = 4.78
Complete drive set 139.98 + VAT
Total invoice €565.77

Point to note, mine is an A Class LHD 2.8 Power which are quite awkward to do. A Coachbuilt or PVC with the original FIAT cab/bonnet are easier and FIAT have fixed time for the job.
There's a no quibble guarantee from FIAT for the job, so if something associated with the job goes pear shaped FIAT should stand over it anywhere in Europe.

All in all your quote for €730 looks exorbitant.

That sounds about right. I had got a quote of approx €450- 500 for timing belt kit and fitting. Including tensioners etc but not water pump. The extra cost to me was for other work carried out

Some people have mentioned buying the part - have many/any fitted it? Would it be way beyond the capability of a lay person?!

I would personally say that this is not a job for a lay person because if there is a slip in the timeing between taking off the old belt and renewing the new one it could be very costly.
Not a problen for a decent mechanic.

There prices seem exorbitant. It is quite a straight forward job for a mechanic or someone with a reasonable knowledge of engines. I usually buy the parts and take them to whoever is fixing, saves him adding his cut onto the parts. Check ebay but look for a good make I think I had the timing belt done in my van a few years ago for a couple of hundred pounds

An old trick when changing a timing belt was to cut the old belt down the middle along the entire length with a stanley knife and remove the outer half, fit the new belt on to the outer half of the belt gears then cut off the rest of the old belt in the direction away from the new belt making sure not to nick the new belt and then push in the new belt the rest of the way on the gears . BEWARE it cannot be done on some modern engines that don't have a key on the gears and should you have to loosen one them them to get on the new belt.

Been looking at complete kits on mister-auto several including continental 120 euros for complete kits ,rollers etc. I would get your belt inspected as it should last 60,000 miles, not kilometres at least.

The mileage is probably more in line with a vehicle which is being used every day, 60,000 miles in a camper could be over 20 years old which would not be a good idea.

Just had mine done 2.3 Ducato same as yours 2011. 50,000km. cost €450 without water pump. this was a main dealer, Dublin, he said I most likely would not need the pump due to the mileage and use. His Mechanic would inspect it and if needed it would cost extra (cant remember how much) He didn't change it, said it was grand.

For low mileage vehicles the recommended replacement period is 5 years.
Look at it this way, for about €100 a year you have peace of mind you won't get hit with an engine rebuild bill.
