Hello Craicers.

We are on beautiful Achill Island at the moment. Absolutely stunning...but that wind!! Our gas hob won't stay lit. Is there anything we can do or am I missing something? I'm presuming it's because of the wind blowing into the vents.

Thanks in advance.

Its the wind alright just turn the vents away from it , and figure out a way to stop it happening when you get home but DONT block the vents you need them

It is possible but seems unlikely that the wind through the vents (fridge vents??) would blow out the hob flames repeatedly, in normal use.
Are all of the hobs failing or is it a particular one?

Can you Turn van 180 degrees, so the other side faces the wind? Can you temporarily tape paper over the vents to allow you to test the hob?
The vents are essential for fridge operation, so don't cover them for too long and turn off the fridge for a little while, while checking the hob.

Possible Thermocouple Problem?

Thermocouple is a Safety cut-out device that cuts off the gas supply to the device, if the flame goes out for any reason, and prevents the release of gas into the vehicle.
The heat from the flame causes expansion of a substance within the thermocouple bulb/tube to open a gas valve.
If the flame goes out the thermocouple cools, the contents of the thermocouple contract and the gas valve closes, cutting off the gas supply.

Simple test of the thermocouple.
Light a hob keeping the knob (gas valve for ON?OFF and adjusting the flame intensity) pressed in for a long time .... perhaps 30 or 40 or 50 seconds.
If the hob remains lighting, while the button is Pressed In, but goes out when the button is released, it suggests
(a) a faulty Thermocouple, or
(b) the probe of the thermocouple is not being heated, properly by the flame..... i.e. it has moved away from the flame, or maybe something dropped on it.

If the flame goes out even while holding the button Pressed In, it suggests a different problem
Wind blowing it out
Gas Supply
Regulator
Blocked pipe
Blocked Burner
If other gas devices, fridge, oven, heater etc. are working ok, the regulator and gas supply are probably ok

It's a long shot, but if you can beg, borrow or steal a hoover, suck out each hob, especially if you can remove the burner. The amount of dust and dirt that accumulate under the the burner is unbelievable especially when pots boil over.
The themocouple get blackened over time with the bottom of empty cylinders containing oil. A good dry scrubbing with a coarse pot scrub should clear the oily residue.

Well we've established that it was definitely an Achill Island wind problem!! 😂 We turned the camper around and it was still a bit of an issue but then another camper pulled in beside us and blocked some more of the wind and problem solved!

We have moved on since and have had no problems.

Thanks so much everyone for all the help. It's all a learning curve!

Thanks also for the offer of cooking the spuds! What a great bunch of people on here 😊

Glad you're sorted, your predicament reminds me of this story:

A man goes skydiving for the first time.
After listening to the instructor for what seems like days, he is ready to go.
Excited, he jumps out of the aeroplane. After a bit, he pulls the ripcord. Nothing happens.
He tries again. Still nothing. He starts to panic, but remembers his back-up chute.
He pulls that cord. Nothing happens...

He frantically begins pulling both cords, but to no avail.
Suddenly, he looks down and he can't believe his eyes.
Another man is in the air with him, but this guy is going *up*!!

Just as the other guy passes by, the skydiver -- by this time scared out of his wits -- yells,
"Hey, do you know anything about skydiving?"

The other guy yells back, "No!
Do you know anything about gas cookers?"

Next time I go to Mayo, I'm bringing a bag of turf to make the tay and a windmill for my hair curler!

Delighted that you're cooking again.

But without my windmill, how do I heat the air from the tube to manipulate my curls?

Talk a lot of Sh..te/hot air?
Build a turf fire under the funnel?
Do the grenades give off heat when they murder the midgets?
