Has anyone had their renewal notice from Dolmen this year? Mine's gone up a lot, and currently awaiting a reply to a query email.

Likewise mine went up around £20 or so, considering the sorts of rate increases which are going around the insurance industry at the moment it's not too bad especially as it was the same for the past 6years

Our insurance is due near the of August and since we are heading to France for a few weeks of August, I discovered that our policy lasped on the date that we were sailing back to Ireland.
Been the honest bloke that I am, I decided to ring Dolemn today to inquire about the next policy. They couldn't help me as the renewal notice has to come from Axa to them and then to me. This means that they couldn't even quote me a price or anything else.
The only thing that they could do is contact Axa and ask for an early renewal to be sent out. Alternatively I could use the on line facilities to complete the transaction. It doesn't make sense.
I will wait and see.

You should get your renewal notice a month before, failing this you can do it on line ,most french supermarkets and cafes offer free WiFi. If you want time to shop around, you can get on line insurance for 1 or 2 days to get you home

I'm with Dolmen and my renewal date came around while I was away.
A simple phone call to them got the renewal price which I paid using my credit card and they sent the cover note and disc to the campsite I was staying at.
when I got home all the bumph was waiting for me with the rest of our post.

The two main insurers are Dolmen and Stuarts, both operate a group scheme in that you get a decent price but never get no claims bonus. I think the other issue is you have to have a personal car insurance policy. For the price its hard to beat.

I am with Dolmens ,which was cheaper than the UK quotes , but when I asked them for a quote for my car insurance they said they couldnt do it, perhaps my age had a bearing, So I stayed with Saga. This is a point worth noting ,if you have a good insurance ,stay with them as it gets harder to get, as Old Father Time advances on you

Paid Dolmens yesterday, €344 including €24 brokers fee and 5% government levy. Its is up €3 on 2016 and €24 on 2015 rates.
There was a possible 10% discount if the excess was increased from €126 to €500, but I declined it.

The amount due this year is €428.00 including our admin fee of €49.24 and 5% government levy. This premium includes free Breakdown Assist and Home Start Service as standard. We recommend this policy due to its cover and price.

This was my renewal for open drive .
I wish I could get ad good for my cars

Same here. I queried the increase and they said that homestart is now included!! Mine with Stuart's was €325 last year, and €315 the year before! Upward trend it appears......robbery

I just got the quote for my car €557 including the levy €24.64 + €40 fee.
But that not the real story , everyone only talks about the amount they have to pay. The real story is the figure of €1,623.72 they started with and at the first opportunity they will revert to if anything goes wrong.

GOVERNMENT AND REGULATOR APPROVED LEGALIZED ROBBERY.

I think it was here somewhere that I read, you can get a discount on your insurance with Dolmen if you are a member of a club.
After phoning to check if this is correct I received a refund by cheque for £20.
This was for membership of I.C.C.C. My renewal was in April so was worth enquiring about.
So members of any club it may be worth your while to contact them if you don't already get the discount.

Dolmen has no limit provided you have a permanent house which you normally live in.

Thanks kabundi. Had a look myself but couldn't find anything. Was debating leaving the van in France or Spain for 2 months next year and flying home rather than booking 2nd Ferry.

I spoke to them when I was going on a 3 month trip and that is what I was told.

In hindsight I should have got it in writing.

It would be worth you dropping them an email, you'll then have proof of their conditions.

Hi Starling,

I would be inclined to ask what the situation was regarding leaving the van un attended for such a long period of time. I have a feeling cover would not extend to that. You may have to ensure you have cover at the storage location provided by the place you leave the van.

Good point Davy.

I remember reading somewhere that cover lapsed even if the van was left unoccupied away from its registered address for even one night.

A lot of ifs and buts to be considered also we think its either going to have to be a small private barn with a few other vehicles or a proper run car parking facility . We have seen a few pics of places where 50 or more caravans parked and they had a fire.
For France we worked it out that we could save approx £250 but the down side is that you wont have you van stocked with your favorite, branston beans, Bacon etc .
It would be worth wile though if you were down in Spain and popping home for a month at xmas .
Just booked the outward trip last night for 21st August from Dublin , the new boat more expensive and cabins more expensive as well :(

We got our renewal for Open Drive Dolmen for 28 Jan 2018.
Decided to pay today , early, incase we forgot about it, cost €429
Paid it on line and the price increased to €442 rang Dolmen, they said it was a 3% Levy for using credit card,
This was not obvious before paid.
It wouldn’t have been out of the way for us to call into Dolmen office, but everything seems to be done online.
Like Thorn 123 we stuck with the excess of €125 rather than get the discount, and we didnt even claim the €500 it cost for broken mirror incase it put up the price.

I used to pay by credit card as I have one that was commission free, but when they started the levy I began to pay simply by debit card. Probably works out similar by the time exchange commission is taken out.

Had a renewal email from Dolmen a couple of days ago. My renewal premium was £GBP 297 rather than €EURO. AFAIR it has always been £GBP

I got mine with Dolmen when I bought the van a few months back, I must say that I was surprise on how easy they made it and how affordable it is compared to my other vehicles.

Only time I rang them thus far they were very helpful and were more than willing to assist and sort me out. Luckily I manage to patch my leaking power steering rack pipe and go back home on my own, but it was nice to know they got me covered if I ended up on the side of the road.

I don't know how it is up north but over here insurance is extremely high, so I'm happy out with the 340 per year for the van.

Cheers,
Rami
