Checking oil in 2.3 Multijet

I don't have the digital oil display on the dash (seemingly removed on X290 models) and have to rely on the dipstick which is a bit of a nightmare.

When I was getting the TV aerial installed, the technician checked the oil level and said it was fine but I am keen to know if the 2.3 Multijet requires regular top ups between services and which top up oil should I get (exact oil spec is listed somewhere in handbook but what brand do Craicers use)?

I would check the oil every 1000 miles as most diesels use oil. As for type use what it says in the hand book as it can vary from one engine type to another. Buy from a motor factors as they tend to be cheaper, but still decent quality.

I have never used the digital display in the van or car,I use the dip stick,

2424, I take it yours recommends SAE 0W-30 ACEA C2.

When your engine is serviced, get the garage to give you the rest of can. They usually bill you for 5 litres but never use near that amount. The remainder of the can is for you to top up. It also keeps the garage on it toes as to the quality of oil that they are using. I find with the small independent garages the type of oil used is relatively to "deal of the week " offer from their suppliers.
I am led to believe that mixing of different brands and types of engine oil is a big no no these days.

A distributor for Mobil oil products told me this years ago. The engine manufacturers and oil companies decided about 30 years ago that the 5 L can of oil was to last the full service interval. Lets say a 20 year old 2.5L diesel engine take 4.25 L to service, that leaves 750 ml for topping up which as mentioned earlier a diesel engine always consums some oil.

Can you get an accurate oil level reading on the dipstick?

One side shows one level and the other side is different. Then clean and replace the dipstick and the level is different again! Never had this with cars..

I don't pay too much attention to the manufacturer as some are a silly price and you paying for the brand name. The main thing is that the correct spec oil is used. I use ACEA C2 5W30 fully synthetic in my 2.3 multijet. Manual calls for 6.5 ltrs. I always use dipstick to check, sure one side may be a mill above the other but you get an accurate reading after a couple of dips! Check when engine cold and Van on level ground. Even though I never reach the mileage required between change intervals, I still change it every year, among other things such as fuel filter etc.
