Try a spare key, your key could be bent or worn.
Try spraying wd40( easing oil) into the keyslot to ease water or dirt out of lock.
Some diesel caps you have to push the whole cap towards the tank while turning the key especially if not opened for awhile, something to do with air pressure /vacuum build up in tank

thanks thorn123.
i will give that a go. the key is turning the cylinder, and the cap is turning, but just not coming off. it could be a pressure thing, although there is half a tank of juice in it.

Sometimes the rubber gasket seal on the inside of the cap becomes dry and can act like glue. A good tip is to lube it twice an year since it not being opened regularly. Use a drop of oil doesn't have to be engine, even vegetable oil will do.

We had a similar problem with the Water cap on our last Motorhome, I just drilled a small hole through the outer part of the cap right through the inner part and put a nail through the two parts, this locked the two parts together and then I just twisted it off.

I had a problem with my diesel cap last year. I took it off to fill with diesel and couldn’t get it locked again. I drove around for two weeks with it stuck on with black tape. I even called at Fiat in France to buy a new one but couldn’t get one. Wasn’t until the end of the holiday I realised I was using the wrong key, but in my defence I have only had the MH 14 years
