Coming across to Ireland at the end of the month , I understand some roads have toll charges is it possible to avoid them or pay in advance also is there a site that will show where they are.

To be fair the only one that is a bit of a nuisance is around Dublin on the M50 as you have to pay online and you have to pay within 24hrs (I think of using it) the others and there are not many you can pay like the Severn bridge only they are a lot cheaper

Jamie,
Good idea is to open a video account with eflow.
Just enter your reg number and you're automatically billed at end of month.
I have our cars and motorhome registered on the system, perfect for m50 trips.

Yes. Sometimes to go around them isn't worth the hassle the one at Limerick for example is €1.90.

There isn't that many.
Ring road around Dublin does not have toll booths, you must remember to pay by 8pm the following day at designated shops. Best way is to register your vehicle on www.eflow.ie and assign a debit card to it, that way it is cheaper and automatically done for the M50.
Other toll roads, M1 towards Belfast has toll booths only or a tag, roads west towards Galway has booths, road south towards Cork has toll booths.
All are well signposted, have coins to hand for payment.

Most of the tolls are 1.90 euro , they are number plate recognition for the class of vehicle although they are not all up to date with their software .They tried to charge me 3.40 (van ) on the M4 yesterday morning . so its always best to go to an attendant lane and then if they try to charge you for a van rate instead or a car rate ,you can always offer to make the coffee while they sort themselves out.

There are no toll roads in the north of Ireland, if you intend to follow the coast towards Galway then there will be little or no toll cost, if you take the motorways then you will have four or five tolls to pay each way

Good choice . you only use motorways for speed , you wouldn't want to be rushing around the coast . I'm sure like most of us you got your Motorhome to wander around and look at the sites.

Enjoy your time and take it handy.

If you have a satnav, I think there's an option in settings to avoid toll roads.
But if you're taking the coastal route, it's the best and more enjoyable route. Enjoy!

I see you are coming into Larne, my home town, if it's in the afternoon and you are looking for somewhere for your first overnight , would suggest the village of Glenarm , just 10miles up the A2 coast rd from Larne. Free of course. Park by the marina signposted as coach park but no coaches will be there just the odd motorhome unless it's the weekend when there will be a few more. Beautiful spot at the first of the glens of Antrim, beside river/ sea with views across to Scotland. Handy to toilets, shop and pub .....and the locals are nice friendly people.

Agree, Glenarm is a great stopover!! (it's on the APP) - but don't expect much phone signal or TV signal unless you have satellite, it seems to be a signal blackspot :)

Thinking of a brief tour around Ireland, starting in Co Down. Down East coast and clockwise route. I have looked at Tag sites etc, however, when I look at pricing, it does not have a category for Motorhomes. I note on an earlier reply that we should pay car rates. Is this correct and where is this stated, so that I can print a copy and take with me.

You don't need to ,once you tax disc indicates you are classified as a camper/motorhomes you pass trough as a car . your best go trough a lane with an attendant .if any doubt tell them you will put the kettle on and offer them a cup of coffee while the sort it out

No tax disks in U.K./N.Irl any longer....... but as you say, go to an attended lane and they will sort any issues.
They are actually very efficient and courteous any time I deal with them.
For what it's worth, my motorhome is UK registered, I have a video account with eflow for M50 journeys and I pay the car rate always plus a discount of 50c per journey for having a video account.
Also, I have never paid anymore than the car rate at an automated or attended barrier.
My motorhome is 7.5m x 3.2m x 2.3m and <3500kgs.

I have found that at some of the automatic systems it charges the van rate but if you press the information button they just change the rate. They dont even bother answering the call :-)

If you use the M50, be careful as I'm in the middle of a dispute with their UK collection agency, EPC ugh... They want £90 for a toll I was late paying, I'd forgotten about it and paid the day after I got the bill in the post, then, this week, I got a further £90 bill....!!!

In the dàil today, it was disclosed that in 2015, €5.2 million and in 2016, €4.6 million, in unpaid tolls for the M50 were writen off as unpayable and uncollectable.
Maybe you were too honest in contacting them.

But it's the honest people who tax and insure their cars that will. My son used the M50 last month without realising he needed to pay. Letter yesterday demanding toll charge and a late payment fee from a UK collection agency! He's now on my account.

Another bloody tax right off,
it is crazy to think that 9.8 million could not be collected for a 10/15 % fee

Just got a letter today from EPC plc for late payment of M50 Toll. I know I paid the Toll (however may have been after 8pm the following day) but can't find receipt so just have to suck it up. Fee + late payment £6.44. Paid online with credit card. They threatened an addition penalty of €41 if not paid within 14 days.
The last time I was down south the lady manning the toll both told me that M50 toll can be paid at any Topaz station. It saves the hassle of going online to pay.

I work at kitting out trucks with body building, cranes and all sort of attachments. Two things, that Dublin haulage companies look for.
No 1- the biggest and blingest light bar on the front bumper.
No 2- the ugliest and the roughest rear end finish with the rear number plate buried under the body.
But why?
The simple explanation is that both items cover the number plates from the cameras, because the cameras point at 45° angle to the road surface. The celver part is when they stop at a Garda check point, the cop car cameras are pointed level about 3 foot off the road surface, and they can read the number plate.
I reckon that is these guys who got off because a truck through the M50 is more than €5 per trip

Some good advice there, these toal charges are becoming a pain in the ass.
We paid our M50 toal charge prior to going on our July holidays to spain only for today being sent a surcharge for not paying the proper amount. They were trying to charge us for a commercial vehicle but I was having none of it and after a long phone conversation all was well and no further payment was required.

I've no problem paying, I've been late before and paid €11.40 instead of the €6, my fault and I accept that. However, to have paid the surcharge 1 week and get a demand for €90 the next is outrageous. I've been speaking to Eflow, EPC make it hard to make contact, and they've said they'll stall with it. A penalty of €20, maybe Ok, but €90....!!!
