What a shower of robbing :cense:

Looking at dates for mid term in april, looked at larne to cairnryan, less than €100 difference for a trip to france including cabins return,

Its frustrating

Very frustrating¬!

There are ways of making it cheaper though.

I am sailing tonight Belfast - Cairnryan (car), quick journey there and back in 24 hours - £200 🇧🇭

We were going to go Belfast- Cairnryan - Newcastle - Amsterdam. Every time I went to check other sites / times the price had gone up on my return. It's a shambles, probably going to get Knutt to do the leg work for me, saves the hassle.

Use Nutttravel.co.uk - let on you are visiting a Race, Stock cars, Motorbikes whatever, get 10% discount.

Stena do a Motorhome for the same price as a car on Tuesday Wednesday & Thursday.

Join Stena's club, get points for every trip (book it online on Stena's website), I think you also get points when you join so could make your first one cheaper.

As Mark said above, clear your cookies if you don't buy first time.

Use Sea truck from Warrenpoint.

Use late night/early morning sailings.

-------------

I got a return trip last year for £75 IIRC.

We did that route last summer and paid ~€400. That was out late July back in August. This summer we are going to France again with Stena out late June back mid July and got that for Just over €1,200. BTW we loved Scotland.

That's exactly what they do Mark, but I don't know how to clear individual cookies, and deleting the rest is a hassle later on.

Use two browsers, one for when you need to hide and one for everything else.

Handy guide here for clearing from any browser. https://kb.iu.edu/d/ahic

Here's a good example of the disparity in pricing - I have booked tonight for a Car+4 in July - £288 on Stena.co.uk vs €210 (£180.26 based today's rate) on Stena.ie. for exactly the same crossing/times :o

On Stena.ie, it was showing some sailings sold out but not on Stena.co.uk :(

I went "Incognito" on Stena.ie.

If I click on ColinM's link, the same crossing is £344!

Stena have 20% discount Belfast/Cairnryan until end of January.....Use code: SAVEBIG

Book a trip or ALL of your trips for the year ahead and save up to 20% on each of them. Plans not set or likely to change? No problem, we’re also giving you a FREE upgrade to a Flexi ticket - saving you an additional £20 return and the freedom to change your trip without paying an amendment fee.

Why not do dublin and drive up to Scotland, look at a Liverpool crossing as that can save some miles as well as a day crossing as the night crossing to Liverpool you need a cabin.

Thanks for all suggestions,

Looking like France is going to win as irish sea is just a complete rip off if you ask me,

I wonder if we boycott the ferries (Irish sea) for a year would they get the message,

No, boycotting won't work on the Irl/UK routes, I'm afraid we are a captive market for them.... they will push the price to the maximum we will pay. The motorhome sector is relatively small on the Irl/UK routes and we are not really that important to them...... The freight is what makes the money.
Travelling off peak season to France is inexpensive, on high season the prices quadruple .... proving the point that they will price the market to the absolute maximum they think people will pay.

True,
Also the so called 10% and 25% discount is a joke if you ask me as compared to previous prices (Diesel and wages have not gone up)

Sure Mr Craicer we can give you a 25% discount because we have increased our prices by so much we can well afford to offer the discount,
perceived value comes to mind,

We send vans across to mainland on a frequent basis and we are paying stena and p&o roughly £170 each way for a sprinter/Ducato and one driver, the only thing is we get a free meal on the crossing

You are lucky that they let the Sprinter go as freight and not ordinary I can tell you. Last July I was part of a convoy of almost 30 vehicles and the only ones that go going as freight and hence the free meal was those over 7 tons.

I have looked at fares across the Irish Sea several times over the years in the routes from Rep of Ireland and from Northern Ireland to various ports in Scotland, Wales and England.

When compared to fares to France there seems to be huge anomalies and I have always concluded that there is price fixing going on here because all the Ferry Companies are charging what seem to be very high prices.

I think it would be a useful thing if we - under the banner of Motorhomecraic made a submission to the Minister for Transport Tourism and Sport in Republic and his equivalent person in Northern Ireland to investigate if there is price fixing and there may also be an EU department that would investigate this matter.

The status quo will prevail unless someone challenges them

Sorry to be negative, but I have already done that in the North, the campaign even made it onto TV.

You will get the same answer as I and others have got, "it is a commercial decision"

Hi Ally
Sorry didn't know that you had already worked on it. Did you approach it from the "price fixing" or "cartel" consideration? As far as I know price fixing cartels are illegal although it is sometimes quite difficult to prove that these companies are colluding.

Follow up to my own post above. This link confirms that price fixing is illegal and I know that UK may not be in the EU in next two years but in my experience most countries had a ban on price fixing even before EU legislation covered it.

All Major companies are at it whether by means of monitering competitors prices or by means of internal communication. No minutes of these will ever be recorded which means that there will never be any proof to convict anyone. Sad but true.
