Hi,

Quick oven question please.

Can anyone tell me if there are good low voltage ovens out there, especially for campsites with EHU. Looked at this one
https://www.caravanaccessoryshop.co.uk/product/mini-oven-toaster-650w/3686
And it looks good, has anyone got one?
thanks

Get a gas oven. You can use it when not on hook up.

Hi Mark. At least for this year, not planning to go to any camp sites where there is no EHU, and want to take advantage of it, therefore looking for advice on low voltage electric ovens

If you are on EHU, then lots of people use halogen ovens.

Actually Jon, good idea - I actually have one of these - are they very low in wattage? You have me thinking now - are slow cookers good on using low wattage also maybe?

Halogen ovens are generally 1400 watts ( around 6 amps).
Slow cookers are generally around 300 watts (around 1 1/2 amps)

So the halogen would have to be on on its own if you only have a 6Amp supply (it might have a start up surge which would exceed the 6Amp and trip out the breaker). The slow cooker at 1 and a half amps on high would be a better option,

thanks Paul - great information and thanks for the amp information. The slow cooker to me sounds like a great option if we were to go off somewhere for 5 or 6 hours and have a meal made when we come back to camper. Just need some recipes now cause I dont think the kinds want to be in the South of France, coming back to van after an afternoon swimming, to Irish stew, which is the only thing I ever made in the thing ...

If you are going to the south of france and get the weather we normally get down there you might not feel like cooking in the van at all.
Take a gas BBQ and cook everything on it. I do roast veg, stir fry and anything else I can on it.

We were on a campsite in France a few years ago and the English people beside us had a microwave, deep fat fryer and table top oven in their awning. They cooked every evening but said the same thing every time " yours smells great. wish we had barbecued"

Live outdoors

A wee joint of ham is beautiful from a slow cooker.

Totally agree - we used our Cadac and the external gas point the whole time in France.

Another vote for a Cadac. You can bake potatoes in foil [gas as low as possible], then sear some steaks.

At home we have one of those Aldi (no I haven't got shares in Aldi) electric pressure cookers, cost about €49, it is also a slow cookers etc, but so far only use it for cooking casseroles, spuds etc in 15 mins, quiet, no steam and when finished it stays on to keep warm Didn't take it to France but have used it when away at home if we know we will have EHU, bought it as no more than 1kw but it is big.
Once I bought an Aldi slow cooker but brought it back immediately after reading the instructions...I said it takes too long...they said...well it is a "slow cooker" but it was taking hours to do something that would normally be cooked in 15 mins.

got a 1200w mini oven in the Lidl warehouse sale for half price - €22.50. it worked very well on ehu site of max 10amps. good oven, compact and light weight, has several settings.
