Hello folks, not sure if im posting this in the correct place but here goes. Our first van had a locker that was only suitable for 4.5kg propane bottles which were a pain to find so i thought it might be a bit of a resource if we were to compile a list of places where the various different types, sizes etc of gas were available.

4.5kg propane, clarkes filling station,killala road,Ballina,Co. Mayo.
4.5kg propane,Ted Johnsons,Monread road,Naas,Co.Kildare.

5kg butane,Mulanneys, Robertstown,Co.Kildare
5kg butane,Woodies, Mullingar.Co.Westmeath

I had Butane in the old van and propane in the present one. They say propane will not freeze as easily as butane in the winter. All I know I never had a problem with the Butane freezing and I find the propane a bit more difficult to source, other than that I see no difference.

HSS Hire shops all do them - good price too.

I seen a motorhome in trabolgan at weekend (The Rooneys aboard a Chieftan) who had an ordinarly Calorgas bottle set in the locker sideways.
First i had seen and perhaps the ease in availability is the reason

I think the difference is that engines use liquid LPG taken from the bottom of the bottle while motorhomes use gas LPG which must be taken from the top of the bottle

Propane is a better gas to use because it is more refined and cleaner. I used butane gas in a caravan before and because of it's periodically use sediment lodged in a low point of the pipe leading to the room heater. The pipe had to be removed and blown out with compressed air. An oily grease substance is what came out and my gas plumber said it was a result of butane use.
Current we use the 10kg propane cyclinder by flogas. Our local hardware store, Telfords stock them. We are a bit lucky because we use the 34kg cyclinder at home for the cooker, which has the same thread as above so when the mh cylinder is nearly low I conect it to the house and finish it completely
