See these on eBay they fit on to your gas bottle and you can fill up at service stations ,well you can put 80% into your bottle a lot cheaper than buying a new refill

Brought up a few times and has caused a few debates - on here and on other sites.
My view for what it's worth:
If you want to use one then I am not going to try and stop you, I used one for a while myself. Are they dangerous in my view? not if you have an ounce of common sense. Are they legal, don't think they are illegal but Calor will stop you using one on their equipment.
So whats the problem?
There are plenty of idiots about who could make them dangerous, and those that use them are affecting us that have the proper system fitted by making Garage Owners very very wary of letting anyone fill bottles with the proper syetem or not.

Sorry for bringing this up again was looking at the proper system if service stations don't allow you to fill cylinders how can they allow you to fill up fitted units do they not fill the same way
Surely the difference is that if you buy one of these adaptors you need to weigh your cylinder and work out what 80% is. There is no safety cut out, whereas the gaslow, gasit, autogas and alugas (the main suppliers of purpose made cylinders) have an automatic cut out at 80%
Easy to see why garages may allow fixed installations to fill and not the DIY system which is open to abuse by people who can't count.

A big plus is also that the proper system has a filling point, wether it is internal or external, so you are not standing there with a bottle at the end of a hose connected to a thing that that resembles the Hindenburg

I find this a bit odd. In the USA all "campers" come with refillable cylinders with the auto cutoff. I used to just pop down to KoA and they would refill for me.
It was a boon when travelling in Mexico. Our type were sold at hardware stores for use in BBQ's.

Definitely way to go for safe filling and not possible to overfill.
I've an eBay adaptor for filling the large cylinders as we use them at home for gas heating and cooking in the house.
If the cylinder is empty it isn't difficult to refill correctly with the proper 80% volume by litre calculation.
Most filling stations don't like it, I've been filling mine for years at the local and the owner knows the score .... but he turns away others that he cannot be sure of.

I have both gaslow and an adaptor
gaslow in my van and adaptor to fill cylinders for friends
1 do not take cylinder to garage in car to fill, leave it in motorhome and don't rub garage owners nose in it
if he sees you filling a cylinder in a trailer or car he will approach you
don't be greedy, always make sure cyl is empty, you are saving 11 quid on a 6 kg cylinder so leave cyl open to fully empty and equalise pressure few hours before filling
do not over fill, 6 kg takes ten and half litres so err on side of caution, put ten litres in, do not be greedy
I'm qualified to fill fire extinguishers which also have an 80 per cent rule, its called ullage and is a requirement for cyl to provide gas and not liquid
perfectly safe if you have half a wit
do not be greedy
do not overfill you are saving substantialy as it is
common sense really, altho common sense for emptying toilet cassettes too and people don't obey basic rules
