I got a friend of mine to pick one of these up for me when they were over in England recently. I haven't tried it out yet but was wondering does anyone know what the story is with activating it. Does it have to be activated in the UK or should I be able to just start using it in France when we head over there this summer?

You must activate it within the home network (UK)
You must connect all devices to it before leaving your home network.

Additional devices cannot be connected whilst roaming.

Mark not exactly true. Provided its activated and roaming on if you are using a mifi any device will work..

Sorry. I stand corrected. I was sure I read somewhere in the T&C's that all devices must be connected to the mifi prior to leaving the home network.

Has anyone used their Three mifi in France this year? Just wondering what the coverage is like. We didn't do too bad last year but there were still a good few places we couldn't get a signal. (Also couldn't get signal in Lough Arrow a few weeks ago and none in Killybegs last weekend). We always used joemobile in France until they were bought out by Virgin - they were great, only time we lost signal was when we crossed borders into Spain or Italy. Does anyone use any other providers over there - would love to find something really reliable as we missed a few amazing places that were just around the corner from some of our stops last year - no fun discovering this when you've arrived back home!!

Yes, I am using mine right now in Gastes, south of Bisscarosse. We have been in France for five weeks and have had really good reception from our three mifi. Even in the Pyrenees. Occasionally my I pad hangs on loading sites but I just turn everything off and on again.
My phone on the other hand which has its own three sim has jumped from supplier to supplier and some of my texts have been late arriving or going.

Thanks for that Davy,it good to hear from some one who is already away and using 3.
A mi_fi sim and a phone sim are what we intend to use when travelling, from October on.
One thing, and it may not happen to you,but when we last used the phone sim, they turned us off after
2 months use in new Zealand.
We still have not contacted "3" to find out why,so will be curious to see if they allow your use to continue after 2 months.
Thanks again enjoy your trip
