any suggestions on internet coverage in France as in is it better to buy a pay as you go type setup or something as roaming charges would be hefty id say?

+1 for three feels like home, even better now that it's in Spain as well
i use three now on hotshot but do they charge for roaming
What we do is pay for 10gb on a monthly contract @ £16. This gives us the "feel at home" option, which we use on the continent in participating countries.
Thinking very seriously of ditching our land line, and just using Three.
You buy the dongle for around £30 one off charge, and take it with you everywhere.

If you are in a "feels like home" country then there is no charge for roaming, three has around 14 countries in the world including the USA and Australia which this applies to. If you have a look at their website you should find out which ones you can go to without roaming charges.
Should have also said UK and Ireland are also part of it. We have a phone and iPad on contract with them for this purpose.

We where in France and Italy for 3 weeks last September. I had planned on using the fon network and read some info on this site before heading away. I never actually managed to get past the landing page of the fon webpage in France. We ended up using the McDonalds network most days, we did this with the assistance of a usb wifi aerial, usually several hundred meters away from the building and away from the busy parts of the car parks.

WE used both our "3" mobile phones and a "3" data dongle in france last year with a wifi aerial very successfully. No extra charges when we got our following mths bill. WE can only speak for ourselves but it worked well for us.
