Hi All can anyone tell me what size of solar panal I would need to run a Halfords cooler box and can it be done The box runs on 12v as well as 240, when I put it on 12 volt it runs great but as I have only one leisure batt it runs the batt down I can start the van and let it tick over and again the box runs well but I don't want to keep running the van every few hours or so any info would be great :-)

Depends on what. Power the box is drawing, but why not fit as large a panel as you afford or fit onto the roof space.

I think the first thing you should do is measure your roof space and whatever panel you buy must fit within this area, no point buying a panel and it sticking 6" out over the side of the van. Then I think I would buy the biggest panel within my Budget that would fit.

by the time to get a panel, controller etc you might be cheaper to buy a wee 2nd hand gas 3way fridge?

If you have room for a100watt panel that measures 47"x 22"x 1.5 inches. That will be enough to drive anything you will need to run. It would be advisable to fit a second battery as the 100watt panel will be more than capable of keeping both batteries charged that will allow you to run your coolbox and a lot more without running your engine. Better to have too much than not enough. Hope this helps.

Just recently had second battery and 140watt panel fitted. Great now being able to keep phone, camera, bike, torch, etc batteries all charged while parked up.
Fitted by Simon, leisure tech dromore.
