France/Spain - Dog passport, info required ?

Not sure in this one, so thought I’d better ask the question.

Crossing the French/Spanish border, and returning....
Do I need to have the pet passports checked/stamped on either side of the border?

Been to France many times and know the protocol on that score but not aware of any requirements when on the European mainland.
Best asking instead of finding out the hard way.

Thanks in advance.

Never had mine checked etc, I got the worming bit done in Spain and not as some do in Calais. In all the travels back and forward over the past 11 years the only time I was stopped at the border was between Andorra and Spain, but that was them looking for duty free items.

Never seen anybody do anything with dogs on any border crossing in mainland Europe and there are thousands of Belgians,Dutch, Germans ,French and many more travelling especially into Spain. But I have seen lots of UK people looking for Vets to get paperwork for their crossing back into the UK. Now I know that you don't need papers to cross to and from the UK . but cant help on Ireland /France.

Thanks everyone.
That eases my mind.
All in order for Ireland/French bit, just a visit to our vet before departure and again on the French side on our return.

Technically you don't need to get your pet checked in Ireland before you travel to France and or Spain as long as you have a valid pet passport. No checks between France and Spain/Portugal.
Need to get you pet wormed <5 days before you cross back.
20 degrees in retamar yesterday.

You need to be careful regarding the worming treatment when returning to Ireland, I thought it was less than 5 days , but Stena notified be by email that it was between 1 to 4 days ( see notes below, this is a section from a sailing update sent to me in October), I contacted them by phone and because I was only a couple of hours over the 4 days, they let me travel. But I wasn't sure they would let me on .

Notes:
1. Please make your visit to the vet between 1 to 4 days maximun for the tapeworm vaccination secction 7 on the passport before arriving in cherbourg Port. (Signed, dated and stamped by the vet)

2. if you have questions call us at our Cherbourg office at the +33233432387.

Below you will find the Irish website for more information:

http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/…toireland/

I always thought it was up to 5 days ( or 120 hrs ) to the time you checked for sailing, but apparently the 5 days refers to the date and time of arrival.

We have been using the same vet for about 10 years now, they charge around 50 euros, not cheap for giving our lab one tablet, I hear it's much cheaper in Spain.

Working tablet and a tick treatment were €25 this year in Spain

Vet prices in France vary considerably I paid €10 last time. I supplied our own pill.

We always use the same vet too, in St-Lo on the way home. Always around 30-40 Euro and he supplies all.

The vet we have used, for 10 years, is a fair bit further south from Cherbourg. On a recent trip we made an appointment with our vet for two days before we expected to travel. We arrived at our alloted time only to be told that the vet was unavailable and the receptionist would do it. The receptionist might have been a trainee vet , I don't know. Anyway, instead of examining our dog to make sure he was fit to travel, she asked me if he was ok? She then tried to give him the tablet , he wasn't having any of it, she tried putting the tablet in a treat, not successful. She then tried putting the tablet at the back of his tongue and holding his mouth shut, again no success. He won't take the tablet in a treat from either my wife or myself. So having watched the vet on many occasions , my wife was able to get him swallow the tablet. Passport was stamped and 50 euros was paid. It might have been cheaper had be brought our own tablet , but I doubt it.

Does that take the biscuit !!!

Me finks I'll be visiting a spanish vet when that time comes. Our last dog passed away 2 years ago but been waiting on the right pairing for a new member to the house. Looks like we all could do with a good list of fair deal Vets lol

Thanks.
This is the first time we’ve travelled with 2 dogs, last few trips we only had the one...... i think our vet in St.Lo won’t be too sore on us with 2 now.

In case you were not aware.
The Aire at Saint Pol dear Leon is a handy one for getting the ferry from Rosscoff the next day.

Martin, having a quick read on the internet I believe that you only can bring Staffys with pedigree papers into France. I don't think that you can bring Staffy crosses in. Its a shame as people who have rescued dogs from shelters may not have the papers to take them on holidays, as the authorities may deem them as dangerous dogs. Maybe I'm not reading it right.

No you are correct , if you have Staffordshire in your paperwork you cant get into France unless you have a pedigree. I don't know if applies to two legged uprights , :-/ .
but it definitely applies to dogs . She is a full blood rescue with only 3 paws . so we will see what can be done .

Just re read the link I had on my previous post. At the top of the second page it says Please note: The Staffordshire bull terrier can be imported in to France, it is not classed as a
dangerous dog.

Our problem is we have a rescue Staffy bitch 16mnts old black/brindle and white. She is neutered and has only 3paws,has all her shots and passport on the way.
What we don't have is a birth cert or pedigree papers, any ideas around this
So we can't take her with us on holidays to France
What I'm interested in is anyone who has brought their Staffy and what checks were done in France.

What breed will be stamped/written on passport? Surely the Vet will take one look at her and deem her to be a Staffie?? Is that not all the document you need for taking her to France?
Just to add.... We dont have birth certs or papers saying our dog's are Border Collie's... Why would you need them for your Staffie??

Here's some useful reading from another motorhome site on that subject...

John this is the stumbling block the bit in brackets
The following breeds of dog are recognized as dangerous dogs and cannot be imported into France:

Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers and Staffordshire Terriers -----------------(without a pedigree certification)---------

Any type of Mastiff or Boerboel
Japanese Tosa Inu (without a pedigree certification)
The following breeds of dog aren’t banned from entering Spain, however they must be registered within three months of entering the country. These breeds are:

Pit Bull Terrier
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
American Staffordshire Terrier
Rottweiler
Dogo Argentino
Fila Brasiliero
Tosa Inu & Akita Inu

I understand the dilema you are in Martin. From what I've read though on other forum's, plenty have brought their Staffies to France/Spain and had no issue's whatsoever. I know that doesn't help you though.....Wonder if those guy's selling Car Licence's can do up a Pedigree Cert for doggie's??? 8-)
