Altering Speedo to display Miles and KM

I have a 1998 Ducato based LHD motorhome & had my MOT certificate withheld today because the Speedo only displays Kph. They said I need to get a sticker or stickers to show both or at least miles as it is not acceptable in NI to only show km only. She passed last year no problem. For good measure they later failed her because the beam reflectors where not deflecting correctly even though that was also fine last year.

My question is where do I source a sticker or paper display to put on my Speedo display? The MOT guy said Downshire camping in Banbridge may help so I will try them tomorrow. eBay seems to have various options but I am not sure what is best.

Has anyone done this before and can you tell me how you went about doing it? I will get new beam deflectors to sort that issue.

Google around for gauge faces, you should be able to find them for your van for sure. Handy to change them around pulling the dash out.

And since you're there, replace the dash light bulbs, you wont believe the difference it makes!!

This was an issue years ago with Japanese imports in Ireland that needed to display mph ....
There was overlays available to fit the clock cluster, however I’m not sure if still available.
Maybe remove cluster and a sign maker could make a circular overlay to put in there?

Thanks for the replies. This company seems to do them but I will email a picture of the dash to be sure. Good idea to change the bulb in the display at the same time as I had heard how poor it is and yes it is not great a night.

Think that is the older type ducato/talbot/j5 dash ?
Has your dash got a blue(ish) background on the speedo ? ... if so, I may have one.

I find this shocking that a test center is requesting miles and kph on the speedo. Both are international accepted units of measurements. Every new car sold in the last 10 years in ROI has only kph speedo.
I am wondering if the equipment used in the test centre is only calibrated for miles per hour only.
You should ring a different test centre and inquiry about test an European camper with a kph speedo. You might get a different answer.

Any EU country other than UK vehicle speedo only needs to be in kmh. However UK registered vehicles have to display both.

I have a supply of modules I bought way back that alter the speedo from MPH to KM/H via the pulse signal from the gearbox. They are programmed for MPH to KM/H but were designed for the Japanese imports into the UK market.

I'm not familiar with the old Ducato. Dies it have an electronic speedo or a cable driven one before I go rooting in the garage and firing up old computers to restore software.

One thing to bear in mind, in the north it is a government test centre, not an independent garage licensed to do MOT tests, so if they say its required then it is, there will be no arguing the point

Even in the USA the speedos were in US miles while many UK imports were Canadian cars with Kilometres
