Cleaning / sterilising waste water tank

Noticed I have a smell coming from our waster water tank even though it has hardly been used and is only 8 months old.
Would love to know what people use to clean their waster water tank.

I have been using the proper tank freshener from thetfords but I think you can also use a dishwasher tablet. Do search on here, I think it was discussed recently.

I put a bucket of warm water and household bleach down each sink about once a month in warm weather . Take the wagon for a drive and then drain it. If we have stayed on a campsite I empty the tank and do it there . The drive home sloshs the water around the tank.
We don't general use our shower, but I have discovered if I put a sink plug into the shower drain the chances of smell is alot less

One of these dissolved in a litre of warm water, put down both sinks and shower drain and flushed with clean water afterwards. Do it when grey tank is about half full. The sloshing around when driving gets to all areas of the tank. Drain after an hour or more and flush with fresh water.

Bleach tabs.

We always use milton, think there no need to use any more expensive products. We never use the water from the tank for drinking. think it safer to use bottled water for drinking.

There are previous comments about this if you do a search. Someone advised us to use Lidl's liquid washing detergent and it's worked a treat for us. But funnily enough you might find that it's because you're not using it so much- the waste water is lying in the tank, even if you empty it there is probably a residual amount. Regular use means you're emptying it more often and the waste water doesn't have a chance to stagnate.

There are some thoughts that Milton etc are bad for any stainless steel pipes etc so I'd be cautious about that.

Anyhow the Lidl stuff seems to work for us.

OK, never tried it in grey tank.
Use bleach tabs in grey tank...... may just try the laundry liquid there too.

I had a pretty strong smell of H2S when draining the tank for the last couple of months. The van is used regularly so it wasn’t any stagnation, most likely food residue and the various soap and detergent residues.

I tried 8 Liters of cheapo coke - didn’t make a blind bit of difference.

500g of caustic soda in 10 litres of water - nailed it first time. No smell at all now.
The van is coming up for 2 years old so I’ll probably repeat this every 12 months.
