Toll Tag

Hopefully we are going to Spain and Portugal next year, and because of the convenience of my Toll Tag in France , I ordered a Tag for Spain and Portugal. There was an offer on that bundled a GALP fuel discount that gives 4 cents per litre off in Spain and 7 cents per litre off in Portugal. Has anyone used one of these cards , how does it work and are they widely accepted.

French motorways have toll sections, like the M1 in Ireland.
The toll tags raises the barrier to let you enter/exit, you are billed the following month.
It is excellent as you don’t need coins/card at the booths.
There are a few operators for the system, We personally use ATMB, see ATMB toll tag website for details.
No problem getting it to an Irish/NI address and registering it to an Irish based account.

Pamela.
Take a look at the post in
Across the water.
French clean air stickers for cities....
There is lot of information about toll tags and the clean air stickers , for Paris and now I think, some other cities.
Both are well worth getting to take the Hassel out of your trip.

Galp is a brand of station, like Esso/BP etc, I would imagine that you will only get the discount off them. If I remember right they are not the cheapest but when you need fuel you need fuel

Thanks, I suppose it's a bit like the services on autoroutes in France or privately owned fuel stations in villages , much more expensive , but there if you need them.

Repsol fuel a bit more expensive but its good around 1.17 , there are a some odd places do cheap fuel but not as easy found as France where you just pop into the hyper u or other main supermarkets.

I have found the Alas station to the rear of the Repsol station (no idea why) at Calafat to be one of the cheapest on the N232 as well as the Bon Area station at Flix on the C12, both in the province of Tarragona. Its were we go as thats where the hassienda is. Failing that most of the Hyper Simply stations at the supermarket are quite well priced.

Yes that is the way we have always done it,no problems other than you need to keep an amount of paper money and change handy.

From our limited experience of french motorways toll booth, the booths are automated accepting coin ,cash and card. However there two screens on the booth, the bottom one for car users and a top one for trucks. I found that in the MH using the booths was a difficult strech because I was between both screens.
Some of the newer motorway can be expensive on tolls. We travelled on one section near Le Mans which was about 45 minutes journey but paid €38 in the toll.

I found the tag really convenient and also stopped me hitting the mirrors and wheels from trying to get close the screen to pay , a bit of a shock when the bill comes through. Just paid 138 euros for the trip from Perpignian back up to Cherbourg.

This website is handy for toll calculations.

http://www.autoroutes.fr/fr/itineraires.htm
It is possible to add extra points, fuel prices and vehicle class etc into your journey.

Results show a route map with toll and fuel costs.

Like that one Mark.
Never used it before, normally used via-Michelin but that site is very good.

And if you drive an RHD you need a passenger or its a pain in the Bum.
Having the tag allows you to use the express lane marked t 30 kpm
And then you sail trough while all the other traffic that passed you in the last hour are in the other lanes trying to get trough .Brilliant

I think so, but we always used a credit card before we got the tag. However, if there is a queue or a delay, it will be at the payment machine. No such queues in the Tag lane. Well worth 20 euro one off charge.

I agree the tag can be very handy and great if your in a Sub 3.5 tonne van or dont pop the 3.00 m Height monitors on the toll.

We were going to get a tag but in the past used cash the first year then the tolls started accepting the pre loaded Caxton FX cards so we used that ever since. The problem we have now that stopped us ordering a Tag is that we are 3.08M and that does not include the Oyster dish so we trigger the class 3 charge and also we are 5.3 tonne. The jump to class 3 hurts on the tolls but like a lot of French etc we have to press the red intercom button and say... je suis dans une campingcar. 99% of the time they drop it to class 2. Sometimes they dont even speak you just see the toll class change and the figure.
