So in a nutshell we are charged €10 to park in a public car park that no other users are charged for with zero services. (Services are provided by Waterways Ireland and are only available summer months).

Doesn't sound like good value to me and smacks of discrimination.

Eamon,
From what went on there during the summer the by law is needed badly,

My only hope is that its used with a bit of common sense,

I like that one.How will they enforce it,the guy that was there this year let them every where.Must be a new warden employed who can do his job.

But you know that once you pay the 10 euro you are welcome you wont get a knock on the door to tell you move on.I think its a step in the right direction.

Mad Max. Law and common sense are strange bedfellows.
As one who enforced legislation for many years you cannot be selective as to how you enforce it. Just look at the current tribunals.

My issue is that it's a public car park. Other private vehicles that use this car park aren't charged for the use. By all means charge everyone the same but to me it smacks of discrimination.

We stopped overnight at Portumna in August and enjoyed it. But as my mh is 6.99 metres I'm no longer welcome. Will just take my money elsewhere. Agree with the comments regarding discriminatory practice.

Also over 7m. I though the point of having all the grass behind the parking spaces was to allow for the rear overhang. As the document is still a draft is there any point in raising the issue?

I have been to quite a lot of Aires on the continent and have never had to leave because of the length of my Motorhome,
why have an Aires but only for some?
Sounds like another half baked idea.

Lads don't worry about not being let if is you're a bit longer then stated .we are not the people they are trying to discourage, and they can't be seen to discriminate against the cousin. They may be doing there best give them a chance .the first one of you, who is turned away because of size, ill be the first one to go down and block the carpark in protest with you.

Stayed there lately, great place but had to reverse over the grass. Don't know what the problem is. If we were parking on the grass I can see how that would be a problem.

Folks. The byelaws seem to differentiate between the motor caravan park and the marina car park, with the length restriction applied to the latter, presumably to prevent an overflow into the 'normal' car park should the motorhome section be full. Comments?

I agree with you on that one Ken, but there is an old saying
You get what you pay for
In this case you are getting less in the low season with the facilities closed for the same money. Having said that they need to police this one vigorously for it to succeed

I have to agree with Chausson.

There are no facilities there for almost 6 months of the year other than a place to park.

It seems unreasonable to have to pay the same amount as when the facilities are available. It's not as if the site is in the middle of the Town and this time of year it's too far to walk into Town.

Also security wise I would not like to leave the van unattended there this time of year unless there was more vans around. It's too quiet and out of the way in my opinion.

I am certainly not against paying the €10 for parking in Portumna during the Summer but I think this time of year it's a rip off.

Passed through Portumna today in the car,
Had a look at the aires and the water and electric are on,
Machine to accept card payment or cash (definatly had coin slot, but forgot to check if it accepted notes)
2 Burstners there, and a few boats tied up,

It's kind of tumble weed season in that end of the world at this time of the year. The Shannon spots have really only a 7 month season from April to October. When Easter comes around they will be bumper to bumper in Portumna.

It sure will,
I was just letting people know that the ehu and water are on,
It will be interesting to see if the €10 fee is enforced properly when it gets busy

We stayed for two nights just after New Year. I Didn't see any notice saying that it was now in force and nobody said I had to. (Well except my kids as they are consenious citizens but I told them it hadn't come in yet!) IMO it should be €5 as €10 is a bit steep. But we did leave a significant spend in the town. The Chinese turned out to be pleasant surprise* and of course we had to return to Cafe Rose.

*Obviously most of their business is take away and we were the only ones in the restaurant. When we went in the place was cold and we thought about leaving again. But in fairness they turned on the heat, we got comfy and the food was very nice.

Staying in Portumna today. Charging now in force. €10 per 24hrs. Warden came around to check. Toilets and showers not open yet but hope to be open in the next 2 weeks. 48 hours limit on stay.
