Every time I start the van it's smoking like it's on fire. Been running it now for 10 mins and it's still the same. Anyone had this before

No ken. Diesel all the time. It seems to clear after about 15 mins. It was also dying and losing power. Bringing it to drogheda tomorrow to have it checked out.

Does it have a turbo? Could be turbo seals failing

Don’t think that model has an intercooler John.
Need more info ?

Blue smoke?
White smoke?
Black smoke?
Is it only when cold? ...... or all the time?
Only when starting?
Is start-up normal?
Is it loosing coolant?
Have you had work done in the interim? ... timing belt or such?

If its a turbo engine there is a pressure hose from the pressure side of the turbo to a diaphragm on the injector pump, if it punctures (the diaphragm) it leaks diesel into the manifold and will cause it to smoke like mad.

Also if it’s a turbo then the bearings could be run causing oil to leak in and burn causing smoke.

Best having it checked out anyway.

What colour is the smoke
If black it could be stuck in cold start or blocked air filter
Whit smoke timing
Or water in the fuel
Turbo bearing could have collapsed and putting oil into the intake causing black smoke .
Take the inter cooler pipe of and check, for lift inf the spindle and signs of metal

Well here is the upshot.
Van sat down on me yesterday. Heading to the cvrt and didnt get more than 2 kilometers, lots of smoke, van stalling, losing power then died. Called breakdown recovery, hauled it to Kavanagh Test Centre in Drogheda for a diagnosis. I had spoken to him last week and he was going to have a look, see what needed to be done, quote me and if it was agreeable he would do the work and all would be well.
It wasnt good. Apart from the emission/engine problem there some other issues that needed sorting.
Hi Robert

Further to our conversation regarding the necessary repairs on you vehicle, please see details below.

1. Diagnose engine/Emission fault.
2. Tidy front and rear corner panels.
3. Replace rear O/S and N/S floor from underside and fit extra cross members to support rear floor.
4. Repair hole in front O/S wing.
5. Fabricate steel to replace corroded structure on O/S Door step.
6. Fabricate steel to reinforce front cross member.
7. Replace front O/S Steel brake pipe.
8. Repair fuel lines (Leaking).
9. Replace front exhaust clamp and rubber.
10. Refit rear O/S helper spring into original holding.

Total charge including labour, parts and retest €1900 plus vat @13.5%
This figure could drop depending on whats found out about the emmission problem. He has quoted me the higher figure of 700 plus vat for the engine problem, hopefully it wont work out that bad.
The way I see it, if i want to Carry on Camping, Ive little choice but to get it sorted. Still a bit gutted, there goes the money for the respray.

Don,t forget to bring it up when down the pub , has to be worth a few commiserating pints :D
If you check the other post ( what did you buy lately ) and add in rebuilding the rear bed , locker's and fitting two gas bottles I'm not far behind you

John, you are right, its money well spent when I look at it. Plus, when I heard allys story I felt my troubles werent so bad. I really like this van and the plan was to try and get it back to its former glory, just didnt expect it to be so soon and sudden lol.
Still, im over the shock and looking forward to the next craic meet, after the next one.

I know this pain. It worked for me to get a second opinion. I had my van at one garage who told me it was a right off. I realised how much I really want it when i got so upset. I was all set to buy another one but decided even if it cost 2k to fix, it would still be easier than buying a new one. ( lots of pro's and con's on this list) I brought it to a less sophisticated garage and i got the whole job done for €675. Now im not saying its perfect and i could be on here crying next week but I thought... hey, lets try it. I kinda just want to tipp around in it. I gave up drink so bought the camper to compensate for my boring nights in so wasnt prepared to give up just yet. sometimes you need reminding why you started. keep at it and keep the chin up. its only money and you wont even remember in a year how much it cost.

" I didnt come this far to only come this far" - love this quote

Van laid up for another week, waiting on a part. Really hoping to have it back for the bank hoping to have it back for the bank holiday weekend. Planning on parking in Howth Saturday, hop on the dart to twn, see Steely Dan, few pints, last dart to Howth, a late beer in Howth if possible, and hit the hay.
