I sold my 1.6TDi Touran a few months ago. I didn't get it done, but went to book it in to get done before giving to the new owner.

VW service manager is a mate of mine, he told me that loads of customers complained the car was down on power after it. He told me he wouldn't be doing it on his own car if he had the choice.

I passed this info to the new owner who decided to keep her as she was.

Friend of mine has 2011 yeti 1.6 diesel and brought it in for the update,
Its driving him mad as down on power and randomly goes into limp mode, happened him twice whilst overtaking,

He is thinking of selling it as skoda will not put it back the way it was,

My motto is no smoke no poke ;-)

Dave, you will be probably beter now to go and find an eastern european mechanic. Most of them drive vw and they know their way around the engine bay and the ecu like the back of their hand.
Alternatively go back to the garage that done the "upgrade/downgrade " and explain your problems with their services.
Malcolm.

Same with my tiguan since it was done, have the smell and the vibrations and the fan is running for ages after I pull up. Went back with it and was told that the new settings require the engine to run hotter which helps to reduce the emissions.....

Going back to VW on Monday they said it was probably the engine going through the cleaning process ,is yours still bad joberg , mine due service shortly and I'll get my mechanic to take it out , it was a bad mistake I had a perfectly working car until VW fixed it

I've 15000km done since the update and itmthe smell is as bad as ever especially noticable when driving in city traffic , ithe fan could stay running for 10 mins after I turn the car off after a long drive, been back to the vw dealer a few times but I keep getting the same answer that it's normal after the update, always drove vw but I'll be oozing elsewhere when I'm changing next time

I expect my car to behave like yours as I said I will be getting it taken out ,the FIX seems to be," run the engine hotter" , is the oil , turbo, coolant etc designed for this, I doubt it , won't be buying another VW brand either but they don't care they have lost no sales over this

The long term life of the engine has got to be affected but i suppose by that time it will be out of warranty and not the manufacturers problem.

Our A5 was done last year and appeared to be fine but we traded it in a few days later so really can't say how it went on and it was a 2.0

My wife has a MK7 golf GTD with the 2.0 engine.
It did have the update which was just software.

The 1.6TDi (Touran) was different. It had among other things a mesh gauze fitted.. somewhere, to disrupt the airflow of the intake if I recall correctly.

I have a 1.6 Skoda and emailed Skoda to voice my concerns that there are reports of problems with the ERG and DPF after the repair. They assured me that the fix would not cause a problem and the ERG and DPF would be covered by a 2 year warranty after the fix.
Any website I have looked at would say different. The Skoda dealer in Belfast said that they have not had any problems with vehicles that have been fixed but I am still not sure. I certainly will not be having it done in the near future

As I understand it the fix for at least one of the engines not sure if its the 1.6 or 2.0 involves changing the injection cycle from 1 injection event to 6 injections before TDC, this has resulted in premature failure of the injectors as they now do 6 times the work they did before the ECU change, cleaner burning but at the cost of a greatly reduced lifespan of the piezo injectors.

If my Brain is working right Dave, the actual engine rpm should be the same unless you fitted smaller wheels since, it looks more like that VW have been tampering with the rev counter calibration and God knows what else for what ever reason to get them over the line.

Have to agree with chausson that gearing is one thing and electronics are another, unless your wheels were changed for much smaller ones or your differential was changed or your gearbox then that is the only way that the change in rpm could have happened.
Most likely that there has been a fudge made within the electronics to get your vehicle to meet the emission requirements and that has effected your digital rpm reading.
It would appear that these manufacturers are more concerned with printouts than they are with what comes out of the exhaust.
Just look back on the last couple of years and form your opinion.

I used to like VW's the last one I had was a Mk2 Golf, wife had one as well, but the modern stuff leaves me cold.
I'd never buy a German car now. Seen too many cases of crap engineering to give me any confidence.
Audi Cambelt tensioners pulling out of the block, Failing oilpump drives, BXE engines letting the conrods out the side of the block, window regulators that have to be coded to the car, no chance of using scrapyard parts....
Nope I'll stay Japanese thanks. They all have problems but the Japanese seem to have less.

And they don't have such disregard and contempt for their customers, that expect them to be so impressed by a bit Japanese babble, they will run out and buy their cars.

I have found Toyota to be exemplary in their customer service, I had a 97 Landcruiser which was recalled for new rear halfshafts, it was over 10yrs old at that stage and they were replaced due to the risk of cracking.
I can't imagine any German marque doing that, in fact there is over 50 people taking a case against BMW for their N47 engine timing chain failures, BMW knew about the failure for a long time but dragged their heels and grudgingly fixed some engines and not others. Shameful behaviour TBH when the consequences are so severe.

I would nearly say it is a worldwide thing, Toyota had accelerator recalls not so long ago too. In the past we didn’t have the internet to publicize it. I remember looking at a Documentry about some American Car a few years ago that had an electrical fault that caused the car to burst into flames and the manafacturer decided it was cheaper to compensate for a few lost lives than recall and rectify the fault.

Can't trust VW anymore I traded it in for a Toyota , diagnostics say nothing wrong but engine will rev on its own , car will start but won't drive , exhaust fumes coming into car from EGR valve on cold starts , goes into limp mode for no reason on motorway only 70000 miles on clock but it's working perfectly on diagnostics test , VW seems to have replaced one cheat for another

Its a shame, VW used to be decent vehicles once upon a time, now they are poor quality and their aftersales is atrocious. I swore I'd never buy a VAG after seeing all manner of faults in them that are unrepairable.
