It has been a couple of years, but I think we had to stop at a machine just after crossing from Spain. It recorded the Number plate and we entered credit card details. Then every time we used a toll it was debited from the card. Hopefully someone else can clarify this.

Still the same.
There are two types of toll, one which you register for at a machine as you enter the country this then automatically charges you credit card at the electronic toll points, the other is the regular toll booths which you still pay at, the automatic system doesn't work for these.
It sounds awkward but in reality is fairly hassle free.

Nooooo, the electronic ANPR based system (like the M50 here), which you register for at entry points into the country, doesn't work at manned toll booths, you still need to stop and pay at those

At the moment there are two separate systems in Portugal.

A tag system for locals like we have here which covers both systems and allows use of express lanes at toll booths, just like here.

A pre registration system where you register your vehicle at the point of entry into the country, this system uses ANPR to charge
the toll at non booth toll points (like the M50), but at toll booth locations the system is not recognised so the toll needs to be paid manually at a booth.
