Essential stuff to carry

I know we all carry too much crap, after a life of caravanning and motorhoming I continuously arrive home with stuff I've had no need of. But, there are some items which are really useful, so here one.

Kilrock Big K Descaler it's very effective for clearing out limescale deposits which can build up in the kettle surprisingly quickly if touring in areas with hard water.
It comes around a few times a year at Aldi and I always pick up a bottle or two.

Essential stuff ?

Generally tinned/dry food so we're never stuck and a meal always there.
Couple litres UHT milk, very handy and good backup.
Euro/pound coins for parking meters.
Clothes for all occasions, no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.
Watering can, great for fill up when hose out of reach.

Beer..!.... can't forget beer !

Not really a person to buy 'stuff' , more just essentials and to make the stay comfortable and all we need is there.

Clothes :'( !!. The one item we ALWAYS over pack. we're just back from a 5 month winter/spring sun stay in Spain & Portugal and here's a count and it's far removed from the old army adage, one in the drawer - one on - one in the wash. When packing we do seem to forger that there are washing machines freely available everywhere.

3 of the 5 short sleeved shirts never used
5 of the 9 tee shirts never used
2 of the 3 pullovers never use
2 of the 3 jackets never used
2 of the 5 pairs of shorts never used
2 of the 3 pairs of long trousers never used

We won't mention all the stuff my wife packed that never saw the light of day

Our new intentions for the next trip is to pack less than half what we took this time and if caught short buy it at a weekly market.
Big question is have we really finally learned after 30 years, old dog new trick comes to mind :'(

Yes @ROBANDSUE ....... snap.
Same story with us last French trip..... at least 50% of the clothes unworn. Lesson learnt?.. probably not !

And yes to your other items too, suppose I relate to those as supplies.
Cable ties, bungees, disposable gloves etc.... all must haves.

Gaffer Tape.
Saw a van taping his smashed mirror up last week. Also great for temporary repairs of lockers inside and out.

Not just any old gaffer tape, the best by far I have used is Gorilla tape, you can get it in extra wide as well, 100mm I think.
It sticks a lot better than the cheap silver stuff and doesn't leave a horrible residue afterwards.
I have used it to cover a sunroof which some lowlife scum smashed for fun on an Avensis.
It lasted till I weighed the car in for scrap, and that was about 6 months after the sunroof was broken.

Spare mirror glass for your wing mirrors. You're so much more dependent on them in a Camper than a car and at €10 a side on my Transit, I keep one of each in the glovebox.

For those that cook, you can buy small tubes of minced garlic, ginger and lemongrass in the chilled section of the supermarket.
Saves a load of time making dinners and no need to store messy garlic and other perishables.

dont forget the bottle and tin opener, With advent of multible Supermarkets in the European and our own islands ,where is the point of carrying loads and loads of tins etc. You only need two days supplies as, unless you are in a very remote area you can shop. I would put a tow rope ( grass and rain can be a bugger) some good spanners, jubilee clips and plastic ties. as being in line before corned beef.

For me it would be a Sat Nav. The other essentials would be as mentioned gaffer tape, money, cable ties, money, decent tool kit, spare fuses and even more money

Gmac, you have to be carefull in france and Spain as some give warnings of radar speed traps and if you are seen to be using one ,you will go home without your satnav and a lot less money in your wallet.

Bounder, you could be lucky, i.e Speed cameras readings as general rule have to allow 10% plus 4 k before they prosecute , Sometimes they flash to give you a caution , or because you are not domicile it is not worth their while to prosecute.

Obviously Gaffer Tape, but a collapsible bucket, a thermos flask, a small coolbag for picnics, loads of CDs (or downloaded music) and a citronella candle for when you're sitting outside on those balmy evenings 😎

You do know that they can also check if it is in the software on your SatNav
,its not just s case of you turning it off .

It is not just against the law to to use it,it is also illegal to have it on your device .

Great idea. After reading this I ordered a pair off ebay and they just arrived this morning.
Peace of mind for only £8.49 delivered.

John....I take it you don't have a taste for the earl grey or the endless fruit flavoured French tea varieties ?
Didn't think so.... me neither !,
Always a big bag of Tetley or Barry's in the van before departure....
Once in France I saved an Englishmans life with with a gift of teabags !..... never did I see a man more grateful, he couldn't wait for the kettle to boil !
There's nothing like a proper cuppa when all else fails.

Hope you're both enjoying your trip.

We always pick up a few tons of Cassoulet or Confit De Canard when in France, very handy for cold ould evening wild camping.
A couple of good brollys.
