2 Wheel Drive to 4 Wheel Drive Conversion

Hello all.

Me and my girl are going to buy a already camper converted Renault Master next year and go everywhere we can ;)

We live in Ireland. Seems we may buy van from UK, seems to be a good selection of converted campers there.

We have been advised from a veteran that buying a already converted Renault Master is best. We really like the Renault Master Vehicle. Getting one already converted saves up effort and pain with registration and certs etc, not to say the actual conversion itself.

We really want our van to be 4 wheel drive. It seems many these nice looking camper vans for sale are mostly 2 wheel

I image we will need a professional company to do the conversion to the highest standards, so as the new 4 wheel drive functionality is perfect.

Can you all fill me in from any experience things i need to know and think about with this. I read things like people saying buy 4 wheel from the manufacturers, not do conversion yourself. We really want 4 wheel drive for our travels and we really feel buying second hand already camper converted for around €15,000 seems good choice.

Let me know what you know. Also looking for best places do the conversion in Europe , possible Ireland or UK be better as we live in Ireland

Regards

Daniel

Converting from 2WD to 4WD will be a massive job and you'll require a donor 4WD to do it.
Best buying the 4WD already done. Some of the power companies have 4WD vans, usually Mercedes and/or transits..... seem them in disposal auctions, alas not in camper van livery.
4WD will use more fuel than a 2WD and more components to go wrong.
Keep us updated.

A Mazda Bongo 4x4 ( maybe a bit small ) or look up de-mountable campers , converting 2 to 4 wheel drive as Jon said would be a nightmare

I'd rather buy a factory 4x4 van and convert to a camper and pay the VRT rather that buy a 2wd and try to convert to a 4x4.

Have you looked at a VW T5 4 motion?

Most 4wd vans are ineffective when you go off road because the tyres are too smooth. If you fit a rugger tyre as in like a jeep, you lose load capacity as a jeep tyre cannot be loaded safely to the same weight as a van tyre.

Not to put too fine a point on this but there is no way you will get a 4x4 Master already converted into Ireland for 15k.
You can buy 4x4 Sprinters ex MOD or Police for 10KSTG but they will need to be converted and then VRT paid.

Another option might be use a 4x4 suv with a tent attached, we used to use a Isuzu Trooper with a Napier sportz tent attached before we bought the Motorhome, we had the bed in the Jeep and it was no problem to drive away and leave the tent behind.

How about a de-mountable on a crew cab 4X4 pickup?
