Rear Lighting problem

 ·
Posted: 14.05.2017  ·  #1
HI

My fog light comes on with my reversing light but does not light from the fog light switch.

I did have the clusters off for some bumper repair but was very careful to photograph the wiring and reassemble to original state...All other lights perfect.

Dashboard showing amber lighting warning. I have sprayed contact cleaner on all contacts I could see

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Bob

you have a bad earth connection i'e ground connection the rev light and fog light are sharing the same ground connection .
you'll find a brown wire which most commonly colour for earth .
trace the brown it will be connected to the chassis with a self topper take it of and clean it .
whats happening is when you put the van into rev the bulb is looking for an earth so it cant find it , so it find a path through the bulb element to the dash fog warning bulb to earth

Alternatively if you have a towbar the trailer socket does cause short circuiting like what you have described .

Check that you have the correct bulb in , if you have a double element bulb in it may cause trouble like that,

Hi

its a Chausson Flash 08 on a Ducato 130 multijet chassis (2009)

When I switch on the fog lights nothing happens - the fog dash indicator lights up ok but the fog light does not come on - neither does the reversing light.

Its only when I engage reverse that the reversing and fog lights come on together.

Many thanks

The outer coupling on left centre side of photo should twist off in an anti clock direction about 1/3 of a turn and then stop turning. Then pull apart.
A couple of points to think about first please. We have a Chasson MH similar age but on a transit chassis and about a year ago I was underneath fixing a side lamp and I noticed a trailer socket cable tied in the chassis. Obviously the manufacturer had use proper ford extension wiring looms to extend the cables for the rear lights and the trailer socket came as standard.
What happens if you remove the bulb of the fog lamp and use reverse? If all is good your wiring loom from the cab to rear is good and big liam comment about earths would be correct. If it is still acting the same with fog bulb out and dash lamp on the problem is in the loom . Post info and I keep an eye on forum tonight

Thanks, took out fog bulb - problem persists. I cannot undo the coupling - is there a special tool for this?

Thanks folks

Bob

To be honest I not really familiar with this type of conection. It is going to be difficult to open from being under chassis exposed to the elements.
My concern is now the problem seems to be in the wiring loom or the dash and I reckon that professional help should be called in. Being a 2009 reg, the fault probably needs a laptop to find the fault. Unfortunately the days of a basic toolkit have been replaced by a degree in technology.
I wish you well and let us know what happens and if it is something really simple, you get free slagging rights.

Opened the connector - it has a grey locking clip lever up carefully with a screwdriver and the connection opens easily. Putting it back together is a little trickier - half install locking clip, then reconnect and then push locking clip home....took me a while to work that out. Anyway problem not solved after cleaning and a dash of contact spray so I'm going to have someone look at it. Its ok to drive all important lights are working. Reversing will be a bit brighter than usual....

Thanks for all the suggestions....

Bob

I was looking at your type of van on line seems to be 2 different specs of lamps one is a cluster lamp the other is individual lamps I would would get a length of wire you have 21w single contact bulbs the positive feed goes to the lead contact the earth goes to the metal casing turn the fog light on with a length of wire bared at each end hold one end against the bulb casing then rub the other end against the chassis even rap the wire around a screw driver and scrape it into the chassis the fog light should light
