Upholstered panel under dinette window

Just trying out the dinette to bed option on my Burstner 535. This piece is attached to the side but is removable. It is very well made but I do not know what it is for. Any ideas please? Thanks.

This is a guess on my last van when you converted the dinette to bed you could slide the best base wider than bench seats and a long cushion like the one in the picture became an infill.
